Ok, second attempt at using 3pt stuff with my CA. First was with a Covington single row planter with the A frame 3pt adapter. To me it seemed like the arms were too high and it did not work very well. Welded on some brackets to lower the pins for the 3pt on the planter and it worked ok. Picked up the drawbar 3pt adapter thinking it would be better than the A frame adapter. Tried it today on a MF 22 ABO disk that I picked up and still problems. Center link about 2 inches to long and it is the shortest one I can find - at least from valu-bilt. Going to cut it and reweld to make it about 5 inches shorter which should make it able to pick it off the ground. The main problem I see is that the arms are to high when it connects to the disk. The guy I bought them off of was using an 8n and I am getting stuck just trying to pull them through new plowed ground. They are 6 to 7 ft disk and I have pulled bigger drag disks with no problem. I think it is because the 3 pt arms connect so high it actually pulls the rear wheels up some. Lowering the pins on the disk are really not an option like the planter. I am wondering has anyone welded 4 to 6 inch risers at the end of the arms to connect to 3pt stuff or am I doing somthing wrong here and nobody else is having an issue. Its the cross 3t adapters I am using.
Thanks,

Its hard to adapt ford stuff to other tractors sometimes because of how low they are to the ground..

If the rear of the disc starts to drop down after you have it half way up the top link needs to attach higher on the disc.
Why do today what you can put off til tomorrow.

Thanks,
I cut about 4 inches out of the top link and welded it back togethor and that seemed to make it a bit better.
Bob - there is only one hole for the top link to connect to.
I will try to get some pictures posted of the setup.
Man - how did the 3pt hookup become standard? What a pain to hook and unhook compared to the snap coupler plow I have.

The 3 pt became standard because it was the first of the hitches to loose it protection from patent.

When JD was designing/kicking around the idea for the new generation tractor (4010) they knew that they had to get a better hitch system than they had.  They thought the fast hitch that international was using was the best choice(I agree) and they approached IH and made an offer to purchase production rights and pay royalties to IH for the fast hitch.

Of course IH thought they would be smug and gain market share but keeping the fast hitch from JD.

I have heard but don't know if its true that JD approched AC for the snap coupler with the same result.

Well the 3 point hitch was out of patent so JD decided to use that on their tractors. They used a bastardized version on the 40.
It first came out as standard equipment on the 5/6/720 while they were designing the new generation.

When the 4010 and its successor 4020 captured so much market share, with ford and cases bastardized version(eagle hitch) the standard had been set.  IH and Allis in the early 60's made 3pt standard(with fast/snap coupler optional) and later dropped the snap coupler and fast hitch all together.

I agree with you, 3pt sucks, which is why I don't change my CA over.
