Broken bolts in D17 gas tank

So I went to pull the gauge out of the D17 to replace the float and seal just a easy 30 min at the most job right? Wrong, not for me this time. Some previous owner red loctited the screws and 3 broke off even with the tank. Now what? If I drill will my easy out just break? I will have to drain and remove the tank to get a good straight on shot at the bolts but not sure how to apply enough heat with out messing up the nice original paint. Anyone have any good ideas on this one?

Doesn't Loctite loosen with heat ?

Once you center drill the bolts heat them with a small tip and let cool before you try the easy out otherwise chances are you will break the easy out.  If you have a small brazing tip I would think you could control it enough to get the loctite to release without a lot of paint damage. Some would drill to tap size then retap but I've never had a lot of luck doing it with small bolts. Usually break the tap.

I have a protocol, for removing bolts.  First, out comes the spline and bushing type set, use the bushing, to start the drill bit dead center, just make a dimple.  Then take the left hand drill bit set out, and drill through the bolt, with a small bit.  then enlarge the hole to the correct diameter of the spline type EZ out, again with a LH bit.  Sometimes the LH bit will grab as it is exiting the hole, and back the bolt out. Well, if that don't work, take a solderin iron, with a tip small enough to just fit through the hole, plug it in, and let it heat for 20 mins to a half hour.  Then hammer in the spline type EZ out, attach the drive nut, and use a small air impact or battery impact, to back it out.  Don't just wail away, these are small bolts and EZ outs! alternate between fwd and rev on the impact, till you see movement.  Once you get it moving, the battle is usually over...Wink

just to be super safe, drain tank, wash.rince with soapy water, refill with water THEN drill or heat....
all I know is that you'll be an EXPERT when  busted bolt #3 come out.

hmm, it might have been 'sealer' not 'locktite' ?? still a PITA !!

Drain the tank, take it off, fill it with water. All the way with water. Tig weld a washer and nut to broken bolt. Let cool, they should come out. If you choose the easy out method, buy the four cornered type, throw the spiral ones away. Remember, if the bolt broke, likely the easy out will too!. Use extreme caution on any fuel related issue! I was able to drill out the screw and then use a tap to clear the threads. Be carful as the screws don't go into the tank - may leak if you drill too deep.
