to remove paint from an aluminum rim?
22.5 aluminum rim, years ago got painted black. Other than dismounting the tire, and switching rims, what is an easy, effective method of removing paint from an aluminum rim? TIA |

I put a couple coats of paint remover on and get off as much as possible with a wire brush... Then use a sand blaster... If tire is too big to go in the blaster, build a small plywood or cardboard box over it and a plastic window to look thru.

Walnut shells for blasting if paint stripper don't work. Less damage to wheel

Will give paint stripper, and oven cleaner a try. If they don’t work, then I’ll switch rims, don’t have a blaster.

call a local shop.. If you get 80% of it off with the stripper, they may not charge much to finish it.

Kinda depends n what finish you want to end up with. Easiest way would be to sand it off with a random orbit sander. Start with 60 grit paper and work your way up to 220 grit. Will leave a nice smooth finish that is easy to polish.
For polishing I use a 5" variable speed sander/polisher from Harbor Freight with a 6" sewn cotton buffing wheel and a stick of red polishing rouge. With a little time, you can make it shine like a mirror. |

Don’t need it shine like a mirror, as it’s a company delivery truck. A 1995 KW T800 w/3406e, and Eaton Super 10.
