    Posted: 13 May 2021 at 8:56am
Hello all!

I have a belly mounted sickle bar mower for my Allis C.  I took the old knives off and replaced with new knives.  Somewhere in the process the bar on which the knives are attached was bent and now will not fit as it's supposed to.

I'm going to try straightening it, but if I'm not able to do that, can that bar be replaced with any brand/model?  Is the width and hole spacing fairly standard for sickle bars across brands?

I appreciate any info you all might have.

Thanks,
Josh

there are 2-3 different standards on the bolt spacing... You will need to find one that is correct.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I did that.  Slide the bar in as far as you can, then bend it to straighten it a little and push it in some more.  Keep doing this and it will eventually go all of the way back in and work just fine.

My dad tried to bend one straight but the bar broke at the bend.  You would  have nothing to lose if you broke the bar.

Anyone remember when all those knives were held on with rivets?

If the bar was OK to start with and after you installed the new knives ( maybe with rivets?) you BOWED the bar, then yes you can BOW it back the other way.. If it has a KINK in the middle, thats a different story.

Steve,

Yes, I believe that's what happened.  I'd love to say it was like that when I got it....

It's not kinked and it should be able to bend back.  I'm going to give it some more effort this evening.

I appreciate everybody's input.

Thanks,
Josh

You need to "BEND" it in 20 different spots, just a little in each spot... Slide it into the frame and John said and  push down a few inches to "BEND" it, then go in  6 inches and do it again.... Or you can set it on a couple bricks at each end and stand in the middle with your feet a couple feet apart... Dont KINK the bar, just small bends.

It is not uncommon to BOW a bar when you are beating the rivets down on new cutters.
