Seems there is a abundance of work out there for OLDER Auto and Truck enthusiasts, the ability to find someone able to work Older Machines is devolving to a point people are randomly trying to cajole or buy a mechanic in any method possible. Us Old Knowlege types are dying faster than coming in.
I had to leave Facebook/Meta because of that and political values. Currently receive emails or texts a few times per month as been referred by someone that remembered me or knows me as to getting antiques worked on, I do not and stopped volunteering for that as went to work at the nuke nearly thirty years ago. Been offered so many options and almost got sucked back in, do NOT need the headaches, whining or demands of people that want it done right but do not prefer to pay for that. Last time I got the request the guy would not be deterred, finally told him my cost is $250/hour and the machine will NOT leave until paid for, I would hold a Signed Title until WAS paid for, called it Highway Robbery. Explained he pays for Knowledge and skills, cannot do that is not worth my time. Not contacted me since. Is on many sites on the Net as to inability to find repair facilities or people to fix the older cars these people have or wish to have. They have NO Skills at this and not enough finance to pay for someone else, the magic rock and hard place.

Trouble is, they want the OLD school quality of work & parts but only want to pay the NEW "china parts changer" fees... Admittedly there are some who are happy to pay according to what they receive, but then there's the matter of finding quality parts/materials to do the work to a good standard. The extra work & headache in doing that affects the bottom line even further too.

I'm seeing the same thing around here. I get calls every few weeks from some one that heard that I can repair their car or tractor or rebuild their engine. As has been stated, the hard part is chasing down the parts. And seeing as my back is pretty well shot, I'm just not interested.

can you fix the charging system ? sure but what you dont know is that it needs to be fixed from end to the other right down to the five gallons of water that is in the transmission because you cant have the pumps running with that in there, you cant be responible when they go down from pumping water. all the anti freeze that leaked out of the crack in the bottom hose, just to try it out when you are done the time and the money just isnt there the one s i want are the ones that broke this morning and we need back in service tomorrow thats were you can make some money and keep every one happy sad enought its still chinese parts even from the oem

i think HUD is refering to some of these old "RAN WHEN PARKED"... Setting 20 years in the weeds and "all it needs is a tune up".... ... You never know what your getting into on those....If you want to WORK on something, pick something that "ran last week".... not 20 years ago.

Dammit, there's me shot right outta the water then haha!
Do agree though, when it's a paying job for somebody else then it's best off starting with a machine/vehicle that's a "going concern" because no matter how much they make the right noises ("Oh yeah, I know it could get spendy that's fine"/"just go through and get it going"/"I know there could be other issues from sitting" or whatever) you can guarantee that whenever something fails months down the line (probably whatever it was parked for back in the day) it's your door they're beating on whether it was something you touched or not. Had that with vintage radios when I made the mistake of taking on a couple of "friendly" repairs years ago.

. A few channels like this can help many get better educated on fence row finds. Even some AC content, though the engine was stuck.

Without even clicking either link I'm gonna call it as VGG Derek's a man after my own heart, although I'm more akin to Zipties & Bias Plies/DD speed shop/Complete Toilet Garage in the hackery aspect. It's great fun doing this kinda stuff for yourself, not so much when deadlines and customers are involved though!

It is kinda like any hobby... ...it is fun until you 'have to' get something done in a certain amount of time. that's one way to look at it..
