 Topic: Beautiful Allis-Chalmers 8550 Ad

At a cost of $86,753 new they were big, bad, and beautiful. Was this one of the first 8000 series tractors? The ad still advertises the 7580 so it may be.

It was an 8550 but considered in the 7000 series tractors,if that makes any sense

I never understood the numbering on the 8550. If an articulated 7080 was a 7580, wouldn't a larger tractor be an 8580 or 7880 or ?

There is a definate difference between the 7580 and the 8550. You can see it just by looking at them. I can see alot of difference in the grille, it looks alot wider on the 8550. It's like they are in the process of converting to the 8000 series and the newer articulated tractors like the 4W-305.

I always did like the looks of those AC 4 WD's. I've never seen one in real life. What was the reason for the twin exhaust mufflers? Did the engines have two turbos and separate exhaust manifolds, or what?

The 8550 isn't a transitional step to the 8000 or 4W series. An 8550 is an 8550 and the 4W-305 is an updated 8550. The 4W-220 is still narrow like the 7580 and is the replacement for the 7580. Why they named it the 8550 I don't know.
I think the numbering system went like this......7060 the 70 designated 7000 series of course, the 60 stood for 160 PTO hp. Same with 7080, the 80 stood for 180 PTO hp. The 7580, 7 designated 7000 series and 80 stood for 180 PTO hp the 5 I guess meant 4wd. So the 8550 was so much bigger and passed the 200 PTO hp mark that using the 7000 series designation didn't make sense so it got an 8 to show over 200 PTO hp and the 50 to mark it at 250 PTO hp, the 5 to represent 4WD. Total guesses on my part.
The 7580 came out in 76 and the 8550 a year later if I remember my facts correctly and they were built simultaneously until 81 or 82 when the 4W series replaced them.

Reading the ad- looks like the engine had twin turbos instead of a single large turbo which takes longer to spool up, hence the two mufflers.

8550 had 2 exhaust manifolds, one on each head, with 2 turbos. 1,2,& 3 cyl in frt turbo & 4,5, 6 in rear turbo, they both pressurized one common intake manifold. The pics in the ad were taken at Lorretta Lynns farm.

Does anyone know what has come of the Loretta Lynn farm? Who farms it and does she still own it? What brand of equipment is on the farm now? I remember seeing a large picture on the door to the shop at our dealership of Loretta on a 6080.

Loretta still owns the farm. She built a new house after Mooney died, said she could not live in the old house without Mooney. I rode through there about 3 yrs ago, looked about the same, saw one Massey tractor working around the horse barn. The fields where we use to plow for demo's are in pastures with some beef cows.
