Sorry for what could be a dumb question. The e-start on my B makes horrible grinding sounds more than it turns the engine over. More than 1/2 the time, pressing on the starter pedal will cause the starter to just grind and not engage. I can put the tractor in 3rd gear, rock it a bit, and occasionally have success with the starter engaging afterward.

I took the starter off and the flywheel gears look fairly scarred. I've uses the starter quite a bit in my efforts to get this B starter, and it takes twice the time when I have to keep stocking to rock the tractor in gear.

Can this be easily fixed? By "easy," I mean not splitting the tractor in two. Thanks!

I always wondered if you took the inspection cover off and if it was clean and dry inside(no oil from rear seal leak) why you couldn't heat the ring gear in one spot enough to pry it around a quarter turn. If you could rotate it that far it would work for another 20 years probably. I don't think it would take much heat on the ring gear to be able to move it but you wouldn't have hardly any time to get your move done before it cooled back off.
I just had a thought. There is a taped hole in my CA that lines up with the ring gear. Don't ask how I know. If you put a bolt in that hole with a taper ground on the end of the bolt, line the ring gear up with the bolt to stop rotation of the gear, have a helper put the hand crank in, and when you torch the ring gear enough to make it expand, have your helper turn the crank a quarter turn. Only do this with the engine disabled so it don't fire while you crank it. AM I dreaming or could this really work.        Charlie

The flywheel would most likely absorb the heat as you heat the ring gear and not expand away from the flywheel enough to turn.  Any thing is worth a try that does not damage anything else. Trying to long would put heat into the crankshaft. Not real fast but it would transfer. Probly not hot enough to damage any seals.

Take the starter to an automotive electric shop and ask for a new bendix and new bearings. That grinding sound may be the armature dragging on the pole pieces from worn bearings. I had an 8N that started poorly and the shop wanted to only do brushes, but doing all three it spun the engine nicely.

My Great Uncles 8N would just start to turn over and then drop out and grind. I replaced the bendix with one from tractor supply. That was 30 years ago and it still stays engaged till the tractor starts.
