 Topic: B Side Mount Sickle Mower ID

Hi All, I am new to the Forum and looking for the guys that know. I have my Grandpa's model B (1941 model) and mounted on it is a sickle mower. Had no ID tags or stampings that I can find. Its a side mount with a 5' bar. The pitman arm does not connect straight to the cutting bar it connects to an intermediate linkage. This linkage is the problem. It is missing parts and I don't know what I am looking for. Any help i'd appreciate.

yours has the wooden arm running from the offset crank under the motor ? .... and there is a sliding "ball socket" that attaches to the sickle bar that is gone ? ... this type bar will only cut in the HORIZONTAL position.
There was an OPTIONAL unit that had the crank near the sickle bar and it would rotate upward and cut when in a somewhat vertical position also ..... ????

The offset crank is under the motor but from the offset crank it does not attach to the sickle ball. I will get some pictures this afternoon when I get back to the house.

There is a version of the B/C mower for the B Industrial tractor. This had a 2 piece pitman that would allow for much more up and down travel.

Been trying to upload photos unsuccessfully but I am certain the industrial mower schematic is what I am looking for. I am missing some parts. Any ideas where to start looking for not only parts but manuals?

Do you have a "B tractor or an "IB" tractor with a c-channel frame around the front end and back to both fenders ?

OK.... i have only seen the INDUSTRIAL mower mounted to the c-channel frame of an IB... Never seen one on a B ..... sounds like there may be a THIRD option which was the B sickle frame and pitman arm with a "MODIFIED" end at the outboard end...I have never seen that.
Paul, if you have any additional info on a "B" setup with an Industrial mower, jump in here !!

OK, William sent me 5 photos of his sickle and i will post below. I have never seen this setup. It appears to be the "standard" B sickle frame on the tractor, with a different "PIVOT UNIT" at the bottom that allows SOME vertical travel... William, it appears in the photos that you have MOST of the parts you need... what i dont see is the WOODEN STICK that connects your steel pitman arm to the bell crank under the motor ??? Is that what you need, the WOOD pitman and its steel ends ?
Look at PAULS parts book drawing a few posts UP..

William, you phone or camera is set on HIGH RESOLUTION.. The photos you are taking are 4000 x 3000 pixel size and take up about 2.5 MB each... To post on this site you want to open your picture on your computer in "paintbrush" or similar and shrink it to 800 x 600 pixel and it will take up about 100 KB in size .......... then the site will let you download.

I've never actually seen an IB mower. However all the pictures do seem to match up with the parts book. I had hoped to find one someday to swap the head onto my #5 mower. I do have a NOS IB mower pitman assembly 802439. I also have a NOS 802803 IB mower swathboard. The IB swathboard is shorter that the regular mower swathboard.

I am missing parts #14 and #15 according to the schematic. I went out and looked and I may be missing the swathboard as well.

Paul you need to measure those parts to replicate that pitman! How do you raise the end of the sickle?

The handle is out of it right now but on the fender is mounted a hand operated hydraulic jack. That jack operates a cylinder and arm that tensions the cable and lifts the cutting bar. Maybe I should put it all together and post some operational photos.

I learned the hard way not to over elevate the standard sickle mower. The pitman didn't last long :)

Idle Hands, Yes you have a B-C industrial mower. There were not too many of them made but I do remember my father sent me to my Grandfather's farm to mow for him. I was sent with a C with an industrial mower. Excellent unit. Worked very well Evidently there were some counties that wanted a standard B tractor with the vertical mower for mowing their highways. This unit was made to accommodate them. All the parts shown remind me of that mower. By the way nice looking B. Thanks for taking such good care of my favorite. Good Luck! Bill Long

I am having a hard time picturing the pitman arm working when the cutter BAR is vertical... Did it really go vertical and cut or was it like 30 degree angle ??
The IB mower that i once saw was mounted to the C channel frame, not under the belly. That mower ( not Allis) was capable of vertical cutting..

Steve, Believe it it worked vertical. The linkage shown in paulB's post allow the power to "turn the corner". The customer LOVED this "Industrial Sickle Bar" cause he had an estate to trim and he could trim the entrance way hedge very easily with the sickle bar. I may have seen several of these type of mowers. At the time my father was in the business the Industrial and Agricultural sales were separated. Good Luck! Bill Long
