I got the main jet out of the carburator but I dont know how deep the passage in front of it is supposed to go. I can poke a wire in about 1/4 on an inch past where the main jet was. I am not sure if that is as deep as it goes or if it is supposed to go deeper and is just plugged with sediment?

To me it looks like that passage should go all the way toward to the drain plug.

not sure what carb you have, but they are all somewhat similar... The fuel goes thru the main jet, then gets sucked up a small brass tube into the carburetor throat.. You have to look at the OTHER END of the passage ( inside the bowl, at an angle)  and take the brass tube (discharge jet) out to get everything clean.. it may be a straight run, or it might have an angle to it, but it should feel air when blown thru it.

not yours, but similar....
