After rather painful bidding at an auction yesterday I managed to buy a 3 pt auger with a 12" bit. There was an 8" there as well, but someone really wanted that more than I did. The 12" has hardly been used.
The auger itself was once red, but pretty faded now. It must not be too old as it has warning stickers on it. Whoever made it wasn't too proud as no name I can find. Has an I beam for the main support, curved channel goes down to each of the lower 3 pt, the drive shaft is square tubing over square bar.
Anyway, I'm going to use it with my D17. Never used an auger before, we have pretty heavy clay soil with rocks. I'm a little worried about damaging the PTO - there doesn't seem to be any shear bolt or anything to give if I hit a rock. Anyone use a 12"? Any tips would be appreciated.
cheers,
Creek

Okay, I'm going to give her a try this weekend. I'll feed it in slow and lift it up to clear the hole a coupla times so I don't get it stuck. Just putting in a "show" fire hydrant and a couple fence posts for the donkeys to rub on so they leave their buckets alone. I hope.
Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes.
cheers,
Creek

Well we tried it out on Monday last - crikey does that thing turn fast, even with the engine barely above idle. Installed a coupla holes in the yard. When it hits a rock - and in WhoVille there are plenty rocks - it goes a little wild but I think we got the hang of it. Putting in some fence next week around the new garden, will make my life a lot easier.
I think I'm gonna paint it orange.....
Tomorrow we send 37 broilers to the big chicken coop in the sky, we are trying out the new WhizBang Chicken Plucker for the first time(that is if I get it finished tonite). Supposed to pluck'em in 20 - 30 seconds. I'll post a video if I can get it to work. ..........Whooohooooo!
cheers,
Creek

37 broilers. The smell of blood and wet feathers brings back a lot of memories.I can still hear my grandfather say "They can't feel a thing" as he swung the hatchet.

Well the auger didn't last long.......5 holes. Hit a rock and dang near stalled the engine, then it suddenly unloaded......pto turns but auger doesn't. Hmmmm.
Pulled out of the hole and the auger turns but a slight load stops it. Had a look at the shear bolt..............dang it's a grade 8. What the helms were they thinking?
Hopefully it is just a roll pin inside the gear case. If not I might have a chunk of scrap metal.
Dang auction "deals" are (slowly) edumicating me. First the brush hog - didn't check the blade, assumed no one would be crazy enough to weld a blade........then the auger, I looked at the shear bolt, it had some crud on it, looked to me like a grade 5, who would be krazy enough to put in a grade 8?
I'm starting to see a pattern here......krikey!
