I just got a call from JNunn about the latest from the Muncy Auction.

Seem a friend of his got the rollover plow, WC, Forage Harvester, and cultivators.

He comes back today to pick it up. Sees his plow and cultivator cut up on the scrap truck, and the scrap man was loading his WC.  The scrap man says he bought the stuff off the supposed "owner", an Amish? guy who was dressed in tan at the auction.  The scrap man paid the money back to the guy for the cut up stuff.  He was aiming to scrap the forage harvester he thought he bought as well.  If the scrap man was telling the truth, I would hope this guy presses charges. I remember this Amish guy, btw, didnt come off as a very pleasent guy.  I bet this is what happened to that 80S mower I shuold have been able to get.

Does anyone know the guy who got the 35 picker?  JNunn thinks that might have been stolen and resold as scrap as well.

Ticks me off.

That's just about as low as you can get. My folks had an auction loaded with antiques over 30 years ago. With all 8 of us kids and several neighbors watching, things still disappeared. I don't know how these people live with themselves.

When we had my grandfathers auction  21 years ago there was a family that came in and it was the kids job to snatch stuff. They broke in to the locked chicken coupe and stole are nice ratcheting chain hoist. In order to do this they found a tire and set down the Chevy 250 six cylinder that was hanging form it . What they didn't know is my cousin was sitting upstairs watching them doing this. He followed them out to there car and wrote the license number down. We hd the sheriff look into it but never got the chain hoist back. This family also bought a 4-18 pull type Moline plow and hauled it home in a two wheeled trailer behind there car. I think there was no more than 4 inches between the road and the bumper with that load.

I know the fella that purchased the picker.  It was still there tuesday at 4:20 when I was there.  I just called him but he was already in bed. So don't know if he got it home or not.   That picker was to nice to be scrapped.    JCinPA

When I go to an auction, I come prepared to haul that day. When at a large sale, I pack my stuff off to the pickup right away. You wouldn't think something as large and heavy as a plow or cultivator would be swiped, but I guess you never know.
It sounds fishy to me. The scrap guy being willing to give money back for stuff he had cut and loaded? My gut feeling is the crook got caught red handed. I grew up and worked near a large Amish community and have never seen an Amishman dressed in tan. Not saying I know for 100%, but I've seen many of them and never saw one dressed in tan.

Law enforcement should have a nice long talk with the scrap man and then with the "Amish" guy (doubt if he is really Amish).  IMO there are few people more lowdown than a thief.

Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

Rogers, Ohio  has a machinery auction once a month.  Lots of Amish there...  Lots of crooked people, too.  One month, about 15 trucks had their tailgates stolen. Turned out to be Amish kids stealing them, and then selling them at other auctions.

I hope the police were called, regardless of the scrapper's willingness to pay. Sucks that the plows/cults got cut up like that. I know a few scrappers who would give money back in a hurry, too.  They are good guys who do make a good buck doing the scrap thing. The one guy who used to come around to the body shop was making $3-400 a day back when scrap was at $14/cwt.  Scrap is sitting at $8/cwt right now, so I am sure he is still making $150-200 a day.   That's not bad money.  I know he reported it, too. had a nice truck with a crane and a lift gate.  So, if some problems were to arise, he would gladly make right on them to avoid getting pinched.

Most scrap yards are required to take your photo id for anything over $100 per load, also, the scrap yard here down on the Ohio river takes pictures of every single load and every truck and every driver that comes in.  I don't know how long they store the pictures, but if anything comes up, they have your picture, the scrap's picture, and your photo id.  and they let everyone know they have this stuff.  prevention is much better than prosecution.

John,
Two years ago my buddy had an item (I don't remember what it was now, but something two guys could pick up) stolen at Rogers. We was looking for it when we saw it on a truck going thru the gate. We headed him off at the pass and got him stopped. The Rogers crew checked his slips, he claimed it was an honest mistake! I wanted to call the police, but the Rogers crew and my buddy were not as inclined. Oh, and BTW, he had already passed the the guy checking slips!

Yes, there was a guy there who looked all the Amish except the wrong color as he had
tan colored clothes and reddish hair. Briefly spoke to him; didnt seem to friendly.  Nonetheless, the scrapper could be bullsh*tting on that part. Who knows. Still sore that
80S got away, And I wouldve called the cops if I caught a scrapper taking my stuff.

A..hole living near me recently cut up a Allis 653 crawler, with six way blade, started and ran but locked up on one front idler.  Said he didn't know nothin about diesels or leaking injectors, so cut it up for scrap.  First time I really had the urge to k.ll someone!

Lou,
I have heard many stories about the guys checking tickets at the gates. I don't know what the job qualifications are to work the gate, but I have heard how some of them let stuff slip on purpose for their buddies, and some of them, by 1am when a good summer auction wraps up, are all but asleep standing up, and don't care what is on the ticket. I saw Rogers flea market on Dave and Dave from WQED PBS where they did a whole special on the Rogers flea market.  They showed a guy selling police SWAT vests, and brass knuckles. Not quite sure how they got away with it... The guy quickly covered up the brass knuckles by saying, "no no, that's a belt buckle."

BTW, see that you are in Clinton.   Have you ever stopped by Kopko's Autobody out by Mamone's restaurant and looked at his tractor collection?  He was just finishing up a restoration on a B with a wide front end last spring.  It was all base/clear paint and really good looking.   He has the entire Farmall letter series, and the Ford N series.  I'm not sure how many Allis Chalmers tractors he intends on buying, but if they all get done like the Ford N tractors and the Allis B... They would be a sight to see.

John,
No, I never stopped, although I go by there every day. The B he had there last spring/summer he had for sale looked real sharp. My son lives in the white fram house on the hill behind Kopkos.
I'm actually not in Clinton, just a Clinton address. I'm on 18, just south of 30.

I NEVER LET anything at a sale that I bought. If I buy it and its small items ,like Brian said it goes straight to the truck.Sad that this happens ,but we ALL know that it dose and it is hard to start blameing people when you where not there!

I have been to alot of auctions in my life time.My father would buy anything that no one else wanted, usually for .50 cents or a dollar. My job was to run such purchases to yon truck and keep an eye on truck. We never lost anything(mostly junk),but we always made a concerted effort to remove that day.Buyer beware.Even today I try not to purchase something if I can't get it home that day. From what I hear it was very muddy, may have cost the sellers money.Sounds like a lot of people would have bought and paid more if they could have loaded trucks and trailers. What was auction co. thinking?I bought tractor at auction this summer and could not haul home until next day.Did not sleep a wink and was worried sick it would be gone.Lesson for everyone ;leave at your own risk, seller or auction co. is not liable for loss or damage.
You only need to know 3 things to be a plumber;Crap rolls down hill,Hot is on the left and Don't bite your fingernails

Unless the scrap man was lying through his teeth(which is possible). The Pilgrim he bought the scrap from was the one in homespun clothes brown in color. I remember his bidder number was #3 and I heard that number all day long as winning bidder. Anyhow that was the absolute most F****D UP sale I have ever been to in 35 years. The auctioneer didn't know squat about selling farm machinery or parts and I think he sold"the contents of the weeds" 3 different times. Anyhow I know that Clair would be rolling in his grave seeing a lifetime of collecting the brand cut up and scrapped.

Orange man

After reading your post a couple of times you seem to indicate that the equipment that the "A%%%%" cut up was his.

Your vile talk and talk of vviolence sure does not seem normal to me - and I did not see any other such radical talk.

JMHO, but you need to rethink your attitude and talk.

Wow, that sounds like the auction from Hell. I feel for any of you that ended up on the short end of the stick.  I would be pretty angry myself. I have been to lots of auctions and have not experienced anything like what folks have posted here. Guess I have just been lucky in my trusting innocence. I will certainly be more wary in the future.

Seems like the scrap man should be liable for whatever value your friend decided that equipment was worth, not just what he paid for it.  Most legitimate scrap guys have an idea of who bought what at a sale.  It sounds like a case of getting caught, of course he's going to be willing to pay what it sold for.  The A-holes that steal stuff before the auction really tick me off.

Guys, I have been to a lot of auctions down here but I have never seen anything like you are describing. I'm afraid there would be some serious trouble if something like that happened at one of our auctions.  That's unbelievable.

I bought a mobile home at an auction to set in a mobile home park I own and before I could get it moved it was stolen. Actually it was resold by the party that had the sale to a neighbor for whatever reason but claimed I didn't move it quick enough. It a long story that took a year, an attorney, going to court, but I won and finally got possession and moved it with a court order. Wondered why the second buyer was so decent to me while I was on his property getting it ready to move, found out later he made the seller pay him well for his trouble since they lost in court. LOL

Just another thought. I used to clerk for an auction firm years ago and was oblivious to one of the auctioneers stealing stuff before the sale when he was dealing with heirs that he believed didn't know what they had. The one auctioneer just filled me in on this recently about incidents from 20-25 years ago. This same auctioneer told me he worked later with another company that would pull sheets that had small and misc. items and keep the money. He quit them also.
