I've had the 500 loader off of our D17IV for the last year or so, and had to re-install it yesterday.  I left the frame and main lift cylinders installed and secured upright in the main frame, so it involved "only" maneuvering the tractor into position.  I let the main lift cylinders down first, held by straps, then extended them to the main frame trying to hit the holes perfectly to get the pins in.  Doing this as a one-man job meant constantly on and off the tractor, nudging the hydraulics back and forth ever so slightly.  Of course, one lift cylinder is stubbornly retracted, so even once I got one one, it would raise the entire frame instead of letting the other cylinder extend, so I had to strap the frame down to make the other cylinder extend.  Then getting the main frame pins aligned -,,  Good thing I don't swear, but I was thinking some choice words in my head.

Other than spending the kids' inheritance on a new quick attach loader, are there tricks I'm missing to re-attach one of these conventional loaders?

We always used line up pins with a long taper to align the main frame first. Remove them as we would tap in the factory pins. Then we would attach the cylinders after the main frame was attached
