the same?  The starter on my 49 B would sometimes not engage the ring gear and make a grinding noise.  Today I pulled the starter to check the starter drive and ring gear, drive looked fine, but the ring gear had a rough place where it looked like the starter gear  ground away the front edge of the teeth.   I used a die grinder to remove the burrs from tooth edges, reinstalled the starter,  same problem.  I removed the starter looked at teeth again decided to reinstall starter and as I pushed it back in I noticed it went in past the hole where the bolt would line up.   I turned it slightly and marked hole, removed starter and drilled a new hole for the mounting bolt.  This seems to solve the problem of the grinding noise, but was wondering if the starter was possibly from another year model.         Thanks, Tim

3 B starters I'm aware of- Hand crank, foot rod starter with switch on the bottom and later hand pull rod with switch on the top like a CA.

Sounds like an easier fix than replacing the ring gear.

I had the very same problem with my 49 B. I did the same thing with the die grinder, but that fix made the problem worse. I had to replace the ring gear and my mechanic said the starter was  only engauging  the ring  gear about a sixteenth of an inch. He replaced the starter drive and did something to the starter  to make it engauge  the ring gear fully. Works great now.  He asked me if the starter had been changed before, and as far as I know it was the one that came with the  tractor.

When I bought this tractor it had a solenoid start on it.  I had the local starter re builder to install a switch on the starter with a rod to operate.  The switch is located on bottom front of starter rather than the bottom rear as I believe to be correct for a 49.   This makes me think the starter is not the correct one.   Oh well as long it works...Tim
