On tractordata, it listed the 200 as having a 28 amp alternator.

I believe it's been removed now as I emailed him and he said he had no idea where that came from and he asked me what I thought it was. Now the alternator is not listed, which is better than being wrong but does anyone know what it has?

If its a Delco, a 28 amp version would be a "DN" series that uses an external regulator to monitor the charging chores. Delco's have there I.D. number stamped in the chassis near the top mounting boss. Shoot me that number and I can identify it for you...

Wait so you're saying the 200 might have really had a 28 amp alternator stock? So maybe that wasn't a mistake on tractordata?

No, what I'm saying is if its a Delco, I can I.D. it for you by the P/N to see what amperage unit you have in service on your tractor. I'm not familiar with the 200 and what came on it for a OEM Alt.

Well I don't actually have a 200 so I have no numbers. I was just wondering so it could be corrected on tractordata. I suppose a 28 amp alternator would actually be fine on a 200, because think about it the JD 9630 only has a 200 amp alternator! And that's full of electronics and has a huge motor.

I just changed the alternator on my 190 XT and it had a 32 amp on it.

32 AMP alternators were common in those days.  180s,s185s,190s,200s all had delco alternators with external regualtors, and 170s and 175s to.  hth

Wow, then I guess I won't be taking the 190 alternator for my pickup then! It always reads +40 on the amp meter so we always turn the key off so it doesn't overcharge. I think it has a bad regulator.

I think turning the key off could do harm to the alternator. Overheats if I remember.

I don't think it does cause we always do it so it doesn't overcharge the battery.

If I remember right the instructor at tech school told us that if you don't give a place for the output to flow it will overheat. That's just what I remember. Been awhile, almost 20 years.

55 amp was standard when equipped with a factory cab.....32 amp std on platform tractors. Most had a 55 amp installed when a 32 amp failed.

Its my understanding that if the regulator is working that a alternator should stop charging when the battery is fully charged.

Ah see but ours we figure has a bad regulator and wouldn't stop if the battery was fully charged; that's why we turn the key off. Actually, our 190 alternator did just go bad and we had it redone. But this is after years (10+) of using it. We've never replaced it before.

It was always my understanding that in order for an alternator to charge, it had to have current to it to charge the field.  Hence, if the key is shut off, no current so no charge.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

As a battery reaches 14.6 volts the alternator should have less field and deliver less charge.  A fully charged but idle 12v battery has 2.2-2.4v per cell and 6 cells so at idle or engine off it should read around 13.2-14.6v.  A alternator does need to deliver a current to a storage cell to keep from overheating but only if under field voltage, no field no current.  The problem lays with the constant full amp charge from the alternator when it does charge, it will force the lead sulfate from the battery plates at a higher rate than normal and kill the battery sooner than a normal time frame, it can also lead to a battery failure(explode) if allowed to continue.

most alternators need a signal voltage to get them started, with the key off, you should not have anything available to tell the alternator to charge, even tho the alternator is spinning.  YOu need excitation of the field as Gordon said.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Think your thinking of a generator for having a place for the current to flow.
185 literature says standard was 55amp, didn't say with cab or not, of course all the pics were without cabs.
just rebuilt nephews 200 alternator, stuck in the 78 amp windings.

My 1972 price list shows 32 amp as standard, with the 55 amp being an $8.00 option.
