    Posted: 28 May 2020 at 10:06pm

Well,I had been havin my eye out on the Marketplace for bout a 2-3 ton come-a-long,,,and I come up on  a really nice aluminum unit that can be either a 2000# unit or doublin the cable with a snatch block for 4000# capability.
Don't think I'll ever have a need for the 4000# set up so I went to doin my usual "modifying" to the unit to suit ME,,,,Clap
Took the unit apart to remove the extra dead man attachment off and wound up having to remove the cable completely out of the drum in order to re-route the cable for a straight pull  and then being able to re-spool the cable on the drum. In doing so,,I had to cut the small piece that was on the end of the cable and dead manning inside the drum,,,,clear as mud so far,,,,??
The small SS piece has a ball on end of bout 1/2" round and then is cylindrical bout 1" long. It is bored in the center for OD of cable and I think it was prolly compressed at factory to hold the cable inside it. I was gonna re-use this piece but there was NO WAY I could drill out the cable that was inside it ,,So,,I figured I would machine a new piece,,slip the cable inside it that secure the cable in it with some melted lead,,,??
I have the piece made except for making the one end round,,,,,
I can machine a rough circle with the cutters but,,,,,
 Anybody got any ideas,,??

Well,,Shameless,,,where is your sense of adventure,,,,???Wink
You know,,,them engineers don't know EVERYTHING,,Ya see,,the way they made this thing is when you use it for 4000# service,,by doubling the cable and then dead maning at the come-a-long,,,the cable hook "IS" centered with the centerline of the come-a-long. BUT,,if you use it as a single line 2000# unit,,THEN,,, the cable comes out of the come-a-long at a very odd angle to the centerline of the tool,,,in fact the single line cable is actually pulling "away" from the center of the cable drum,,,kinda a dumb idea they come up with but,,,,but,,,I'ma gonna fix it just for you,,,,,Wink
Other than that,,it is a hell for stout come=a=long,,,,,,Clap

Ok.. from what I understand the 'ball' is used to locate and lightly hold the cableinto the drum. It is NOT designed to be 'tugged' on. All winches need at least 1 full layer on the drum at ALL times !! Tow truck winches do NOT have 'balls' on the ends. The cable is pushed through the hole, then the drum is turned to 'respool' the cable back on. If a driver 'freespools' and drives too far, yup, the cable come OFF the drum.....'as seen on TV (kinda funny..)
So....just get a 'crushable' ball (not a ball bearing) and swage onto the cable.

 Hey dnyom,,thanks for that link,,,

Yeah,,Jay,,that's kinda what I thought and I was trying to make the finished product look and perform as good or better than the original.
I ain't a good enough machinist yet to make one of those  attachments for my lathe,,,besides,,I prolly wouldn't use it again,,,,,Wink never needed one beforeWinkWink
SO,,,I'm thinkin I'll just use the tool bits to do a halfway circular piece and melt some lead fishing weights into the cavity,,,That ought to hold the cable in place,

Ball-with-Shank-End Roller Swage Wire Rope End Fittings
https://www.mcmaster.com/wire-rope-swage-fittings/ball-with-shank-end-roller-swage-wire-rope-end-fittings-not-for-lifting/

Without the swag tool, you could drill a couple holes thru the shank, flux and braze or silver solder.  Could do the same with the proper dia. nut (rounded off or not).

Hey Lou,,,that right there is something I could build,,,gonna start gatherin up materials,,,,,
Hey TBone yeah,,I thought bout just using my new mig, pokin the cable almost to the end of new cable end I machined yesterday and just drop a few dollops of weld material on the cable end and call it good. My first idea was to get some fishing weights and melt em right om top of the cable. I bored the ID enough for some of the lead to migrate all around the cable,,,,ten four,,??
OH,,and Chask as usual you always come up with some great links,,,,,what you got,, a bonefide link finder on your home PC,,??ClapClap

If you could finds a real brass door handle with a 'ball' end, drill cable sized hole through THEN cut off the ball, slide onto cable, squish ball down onto cable in press, maybe 'dress up' the ball so it goes through the hole in the which drum....
I KNOW it'll take less time to do than me typing  this out....

Joe, "what you got,, a bonefide link finder on your home PC".  It's a new app, but I don't think I can Patent it, if I could I would give you royalties for the "Bonefide Link Finder" name I would call it. But it is buried between my ears and I can't get it downloaded to disk.  We'd be Gazillionaires I tell ya Gazillionaires. LOL

DJ take an old file and grind a radius on the end for the size ball you need.  You can make a left and right cutting edge that can by repositioning basically make a complete ball.  Drill the size hole for cable in blank before turning ball.  Using a file eliminates the need for heat treating, can grind the radius using a piece of round stock for radius gage.   Flat stock placed under file for support if needed.

And now for the hillbilly solution. Tie a knot in the end. If you want a purdy ball on the end dip it in molten lead a couple three times and dress it up.
What ever you do, try to keep one wrap minimum at all times.👍

The Rackensack Solution? Wink

The Rackensack nickname is not clearly understood. Its exact origin is unknown. Folklorist Vance Randolph believed Rackensack was "a derisive name for Arkansas." The name has been used in a variety of stories and songs, not all derisively. One resident wrote a poem about the name and the state: There's a beautiful land, 'tis a western track/And they call it by name The Rack-in-sack. The name is seldom heard any more; however, the late cartoonist George Fisher played in a local folk group named Rackensack.

What is "Rackensack"?

.  "Rackensack" has been used at least since the 1840's and is a humorous twist of the mispronunciation of "Arkansas".  Jimmy Driftwood chose the name Rackensack because of its association with Arkansas players of traditional mountain music

Man,,how I wish I could get my IPhone to do what I want it to do,,,,so's I could transfer pics to my PC,,,,!!!! I've tried most of the youtube videos to no avail,,,,,that sob just does not want to talk to the PC,,,,
Anyways,,,Thad,,what I wanted was to keep the cable end "INSIDE" the drum like it was,,so the cable does not have to jump over it and throw it out of kilter when spooling it up. I finally machined a new one on the trusty lathe and then melted some lead into the end of new half ball. New piece fit right nicely into the drum and the cable spooled up real purdy,,,,Clap
Got everything lashed up and the "Engineered Modifications" turned out many wonderfuls as the  thing works like a charm,,,now,,I got to go look me for something to make a good pull on it,,,,Clap
