Well,,I bought a low milage 2006 PT Cruiser out of a Repo lot for a little less than a song hoping to make some profit on the resale. The engine runs great but am kinda concerned bout the auto transmission. When the car has sat for 2-3 hours, and you put in drive,,,it hesitates bout 20-25 seconds before you feel it go into either reverse or drive gear and tranny shifts good after that. I've not worked on automatics as I do not understand enough of the inner workings. Anybody got any ideas????? Front pump,,,?? OH NO,,!! Torque convertor,,??Double OH NO,,,,maybe pee in the gas tank,,,

Got a ranger that did that way . Was fluid leaking out of conveter.Had to wait till it filled up and sometimes it would jerk real hard. Had it rebuilt and works fine now. Try cranking in neutral and wait then shift.

Put some sea foam trans tune in to the tranny and give that a whirl. If it helps it, sell it quick! Darrel

Good luck there I am tired of the Fix It Again Tony (fiat) engineered transmissions seem to be a problem. My wonderful liked them 2 mini vans and a 07 Pacifica. Two of the 3 had transmission trouble and the other van went away at less 150,000 miles so we dodged that one. But the others went at 120 to 130,000.
She was well trained and wanted oil changed ever 3000 in her wagon. Some days farming is more important in you need to get it when weather is right. So she got independent and was going to one of the change oil as you wait places and they checked everything according to the paper work. Well them Fiat engineers did away with the dip stick ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So do you even have a spot to check the transmission fluid on that one. I would say put a little juice in if not. If it smooths out

I'd see if it has an accessible filter and start there by changing the fluid.

I agree with both Walker and Ray. Start with the filter. Might even gut a filter and see if the pump has enough power to make it go. Trade it or sell it now.
I always wanted to put a sbc and turbo 359 in one and build a modern rat rod. |

I was told by transmission shop that certain Chrysler products had trannys where the pump didn't run to circulate the oil unless it was put in neutral for a few seconds before putting in gear after sitting for a while. Had a 96 Dodge 2500 that way.

If the car sat for a long time, the seals are probably dried up in the trans. Sometimes the seals will come back once they get warmed up and the tranny is working again. May take a few long trips. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change the oil and filter in the trans, but I would run it a bit yet and see if it things start working okay again. My 29' pickup streetrod did that in the Springtime when I busted it at outta' moth balls from a long winter. I'd let it idle for a while and let the trans get up to temp. After a few drives down to town (about 20 miles round trip or so a few times) it was good for the rest of the summer and Fall. Jo Jo made sure it shifted okay with her big toe..... Steve@B&B

If it has high miles and you want to change the filter if that is even possible you may wish to collect the old fluid and reuse it. I was told years ago by a mechanic that if the tranny was never serviced and then the fluid was changed it would slip for sure so his suggestion is to either service it regularly or never at all unless you reuse the old fluid. Don't know if it's true or not just what he said.
You can also try one of the $15 miracles in a bottle additives with not much to loose. |

After working at a car lot for 11+ years -- my experience-- Chrysler pt cruisers were either great or not so great. It must a depended on the day of the week they were made. Before you do anything get some Lucas Tranny tune up or Sea Foam stuff trannt stuff and use it. Drive it several hours. Leave it over night if it still acts that way in the morning, it will need to go to the tranny shop.
