Managed to ruin the valve stem on a brand new $50 inner tube, bought a valve stem repair patch from Miller Tire then got to thinking, do you put the repair over the old stem or put a patch over that and install it in a new spot?

I usually cut the old stem out of the tube, patch over the hole and install the replacement stem into the tube at the same angle as the one removed but in a different place on the tube.

That worked, I did double patch the valve stem hole, 1” patch covered with a 2”, just made me feel better. |

Had a tire shop hot patch new valve stems onto tubes for road grader and they went over the old patch area with the new stem - just one area of tube and reused .

22 years owning my tire shop, we always put the new stem over the old stem hole.
