I bought this B from the family that purchased it new.  The engine is rebuilt and runs great.  Just needs a little TLC (and paint).

Chris,
I plan to fix her up and get a coat of paint on her.  Nothing fancy.  I have a Sitrex SM120 mower I plan to put on her.  I bought the 3-point conversion to do so.  The front rims are toast.  What's wrong?  Front bearings, steering box, vibration when running, front pivot is wore out, front rims are toast, rear rims don't hold with blocks, brakes need work (bands), it has a grab when engaging the clutch.  Same ole.  Nice fuel tank, runs pretty good.  Love the Bs and Cs.  I'm too intimidated by the D-series.  I know the B/C series very well--every nut and bolt.  Good luck with the 45.

Steve,
They finally sold the D12 that was at the auction. Owner wanted $1000 at last months auction. It wouldn't start then. This time it was running smoking like mad. sheet metal not good at all. it sold for at or near $1200. You would do fine with a D series. Once you had one you would like it. a little easier to get on and off, but not buy much!
Sounds like you have a good plan for rework and paint. Mower will make it a good working tractor too.
Regards,
 Chris

Nice looking B.  May have some issues but really looks to be in good shape.
If you have to go into the stearing box good luck.  I lost my religion more than once fooling with the box to adjust the play.  Got it not too bad then just had to do better and got it out of kelter again.
Anyway, thanks for taking such good care of my favorite.
Look forward to seeing pictures and hearing progress reports.
Love to see my favorite get such good care.
Good Luck!

Paint??? really??? that looks better than some of what I use.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

Pulled the hubs and bearings fell out in pieces.  Pulled the spindles and they wore pretty bad, especially at the bottom.  The bushings were probably about 1/32 of an inch thick (thin).  I ordered new bushings, but the spindle shaft itself is worn down.  Anybody got some spindles for a B?  I think these may work okay.  I don't expect to drive real far with the beast.

Steve,
Maybe have them welded and re-turned? Sound like me with the new WD45. Each time I look I find more things that were kluged up.
Fixed a couple things today.
You always get right to work on them and dont rest till they are purring again! Have fun!

Thanks Chris.  I can't reuse these spindles.  If you're going to do it--it might as well be right the first time.  I'm on the hunt for spindles.  I need a parts tractor.  I've been watching the 45 post.  You're into now.

The work progresses slowly.  Got the front end partially rebuilt and painted.  New spindle bushings installed.  I'm trying something new with this tractor.  Fix as I pull things off.  By the time I get to the end, all I have to do is reassemble.

Steve,
Repaired wish bone looks very good with bushings in place. I have toyed with the concept of fixing things as removed. Never seems to work for me!

How did you get the old spindle bushings out?  How did you press the new ones in?  I tried to get mine out but they have become one with the axle.  Thanks in advance for any advice - Brad

Brad,
Two came out with a brass drift from the inside. You try to grab an edge and work it out.  Two were like yours, no edge--almost gone.  I take a hacksaw blade and slowly cut a groove into the bushing.  You don't have to all the way to the support metal, but get close.  Then, I use a drift on the outside to "peel" the bushing inward on itself.  Takes some effort, but works for me.  Probably not the correct way either, but it works for me.  To put them back in, simply press them in.  I use a piece of flat stock to cover the entire bushing.  Go slowly.  Good luck.

Made some progress this weekend.  I pulled the engine and got it cleaned up, primed and painted.  I still need to get the peripherals (oil filter assembly, distributor, valve cover etc.) cleaned, serviced and painted.  The previous owner told me the engine was rebuilt and he could never get it started after the rebuild.  The magneto was bad and it ran great for me.  The back of the engine was spotless and the oil pump was obviously rebuilt.  I disassembled it to check it out.  I replaced the ring gear--it was a little worn.  Making progress.

Steve,
Looks awesome! You headed towards a totally cleaned up tractor if your not careful!
Nice to check things out so you know what shape the tractor is in. Sounds like it was not monkeyed up like some are!
Engine looks awesome!

Made a little progress on my latest B project.  The radiator was used in another B that needed one.  I bought a new one for this B.  I got the exhaust manifold, oil filter housing, alternator, and distributor installed.  I also got a 3 point conversion for this B.  Had all the parts sandblasted and painted.  Also sandblasted other parts.  There was some DEEP rust pitting in the seat frame and fender supports.  Still serviceable though.  I took the weekend off to do some woodworking.  I found some 100 year old heart pine from a deconstructed hardware store that needed to made into something.  Simply beautiful wood!  I'll get on the B next weekend--or the next.

Posts like this make me sick! Sick with envy.

Gonna be such a nice B when you are done.

I have yet to open up the front end of mine. I sort of dread it, but in for a penny, in for a pound.

Great work.

Most definitely. I was the executive director of a small natural history museum which focused on the very latest Cretaceous Hell Creek formation of northwest South Dakota. My persoanl interest was in the maniraptoran Dromeosaurid and Chirostenotes theropods as well as the tyrannosaurs.

When/if a paleo anthropologist finds a old Allis millions of years from now I would bet big money they would be excited about it, and do erything they could to save the remains. 99.999% of all dinosaurs that are found are missing “parts” too, and especially if the species are uncommon what is found is cleaned up and saved for posterity. One example from my own experience springs to mind. I found just the skull of a Pachycephalosaur, and several weeks work went into saving it. Finding just the head off of a B two million years in the future would probably spin up said paleo anthropologists as that skull did for me.

I do get the joke.

Got a little done on the B today.  I had the fenders sandblasted and they are rough.  Deep pits and rust through.  Had some sheet metal scraps in the shop, so I decided to fix the rot.  Not a professional job, but it is strong and whole again.

The easy way to take out those spindle bushings is to get a caping chisel (a narrow chisel that just cuts on one side). Drive it down between the bushing and spindle and it will cut the old bushing right out without damaging the spindle.

As far as I am concerned it sure looks like a professional job you did on the fenders! Nice work!
