Ok, long story sorta short. I am 59 years old, younger than some! Carpenter by trade. Working every day at the current place, National known company, local franchise, some issues. Looking for a new employment, interviewed with a large, National known company, local company type thing, but different, don't ask! And was asked to join the force! Meeting on Monday to sign the paper, then comes the piss test? Not a issue! Just a BIG step at this time, but worth it! I am just happy to join, able to do it, great people there, just a big step! GOING FOR IT!! Thanks, Dave needed to vent! More info after the papers are signed! LOL

Chris, that is/was my biggest fear, But did the interview at 6 am on Monday, with the plant manager, and got the call at 930 am with the offer! THAT was a boost for me! But what you said was the, and the truth, a few night of no sleep.

Interesting post - not sure if you were mad? And now glad? - so - seems glad now- but your experience is very valuable in todays construction scene- so many kids want the big money but have no common sence and the drive to work , good luck on your venture

Doug, BOTH, sad to maybe leaving the friends, and co workers, but glad to be able to move on at this time in my life! The past guys that I am currently working with, are family, brothers to me, not sure for the future there, hope to continue contact. New place, looking for older knowledge, able to do the work correct, and show up, work, not on your phone, pass the drug test, not the norm today with the younger folks!

Dave, i dont know your situation, but look into your 401K if you have one.. Some companies will keep it in the program after you leave, and you get it when your 65... Others will let you move it to the new company as you leave.... Some NEW companies will allow you to get into the 401K on day one... some make you set out a year before you can start contributing.....For retirement, some companies will VEST you after 5 years.. some it was 10 years.. Your 59 now, how long will you work for the new company ?
Look into the Health Insurance also. Some companies you have to work 10 years to be eligible for Retire Insurance..... but at 65 you will be on Medi Care anyway ? Edited by steve(ill) - 13 Feb 2021 at 4:54pm |

On your 401k? If your former company tells you to take it when you leave and the new company will not roll it over into theirs check out Investor ( was Oppenheimer they merged) They are the ONLY one that offers what's called a solo 401k. That way you won't have to cash it in and pay out the nose. Maybe talk to a financial advisor, I was in that position myself our advisor set me up with them. Good outfit I did real well with them.

It is difficult to change jobs at that age. I’m not quite that old, and I haven’t had much luck. Not a lot of choices here to begin with but still.
Best of luck to you. Change like this is almost always for the better. If you can’t roll over your 401k to the new company, you can also roll it over to an IRA. You can always go more restrictive like an IRA, but not less restrictive without tax issues. Steve? Retirement health care??? My friend your info might be dated??? That’s a thing of the past except for the very elite, GM, GE, government, etc. Ours was toast years ago. |

Dave, congratulations on your new job. It is a big move to leave an established job at any time but especially when you are nearing retirement age. But sometimes you are not really appreciated until you leave. Your friends will remain your friends whether or not you work with them every day. Others have already given good advice on 401K, health insurance, etc. Praying that God will bless you in your new employment.

What is the fascination with a "NATIONAL" company?? You can't tell us that your "local" isn't hiring ??

I walked away from a 16 year career as a machinist where I was the go to guy and it had plenty of room for advancement to go back to the farm and be with my kids more. I work more now then ever before and don't make much more but it was definitely the right move and I knew it. Sounds like you know it too. Don't ever argue with your gut. It knows more than you give it credit for.

I made that move when I was 54. Kinda scary in it's own way. Had to do something and like thendrix said 'don't argue with your gut' Better off in a lot of ways now but everything comes with a price. It can get pretty tough on this old hide sometimes. I ain't 35 anymore.

Well the only thing that is needed to do is the drug test, all the paper work is sighed. I will be working for Gunton Corp. out of Cleveland OH, with the "home base" for me in Pittsburgh office/ Warrendale. They are, if not the largest private supplier of Pella Window and Doors, and are able to use the Pella "Naming" from what I understand. I will be in the production line/carpenter shop working.

Congratulations on the move! Only advice is to watch your blood pressure for a few months (mine sky rocketed and I didn’t even know). And I lost my uncle at 59 day before he was to start a new job. Don’t intend to put sour grapes, just be cautious while you settle.

Dave,
It may be a small or a large change for you depending on the old job and your time there. I had 20 years in a company, choose to go to another for 4 years and came back and retired. All the moves were positive but the first one was the toughest for me. Sounds like you got this! The new folks needed a good person. Make them happy!

CONGRATS Dave!! Being HAPPY is the most important thing, no matter what it is for. There is going to work, and going to a job. BE HAPPY! One word of advice, seeing as you'll probably be working on a cement floor.....buy the best most comfortable boots you can!! None of those so called 'tennis' shoes. GOOD boots!! You feet and your back will thank me. I can see your smile all the way over here, through the snow storm!
