It's been a while but I think I found my perfect pictures. They combine my two great loves. A steam locomotive and Allis-Chalmers tractors.

I guess this is for the diesel electric fans.

Ted, the way things are, you can get a LOT MORE for train robbery now, than way-back-then... but crime doesn't pay.  It'd take an average guy about 20 years to steal that locomotive... one part at a time... and some of them parts, 'yer gonna need serious help carting 'em off...

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!
WOOOOO WOOOOoooo!!!
I got the OAN and about fell over when I saw the pic.  These two things are my favorites too.  I collect Soo Line stuff because my great grandpa worked for them.  I was hoping more pics would surface of this happening!  Is there any more?! More of the story than what was printed??
I love this, best pics I have found in a LONG time!  I think I may print a couple out and frame them.  Thanks for sharing!

Brings back memories of a flatcar load of tractors that came to the AC dealer in my home town in New York State. After the tractors were unloaded at the team track and driven to the dealers, the railroad wanted the "dunnage" removed from the car (wood timbers, strapping, etc..
My brother and I (both teenagers who had access to an AC B belonging to a family friend) cleaned off the car and built a wooden snow plow for the B with some of the timbers. This was on a rural branchline of the New York Central RR. Bob@allisdowneast
I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not sure.

Great Pictures.  The tractors are pristine.  However, the tractors we received were at least 8 WD-45's set crossways on flat car.  The B's, C's and G's had more.  Also sometimes you had burn marks on the hoods from the engine cinders. In fact they never came a good as those show.  They alway needed a good washing.   As you said Bob they were held on by various wires and wooden blocks.  Yes, it was my job to clear the car after the tractors were removed.
Beautiful engine.  A lost art.
Good Luck!

UPDATE:

The last run of locomotive 1003 under its Federal Railway Administration 15 year "authorization"

occurred Nov. 13, 2010

Now about the tractors. Here is all I could find, it is the description of the video.

Northbound on WSOR tracks the Soo #1003 steams through Waupun, WI at Woodland Drive on Saturday Oct 16, 2010. The Allis-Chalmers tractors on the flat car add to the train being pulled for a Photo Special chartered by HTP Inc.

So its time for a full set of new flues to meet FRA safety regulations. They probably rot faster in occasional service than in full time service.

The Boone and Scenic Valley found a couple decades ago that they could buy a new Chinese steam locomotive (the last one from that factory) for less than the cost of restoring a vintage US locomotive about the size of the 1003. The Chinese loco is larger. And it was down a couple years ago for that flue replacement.

AC 37 if you ever get near NW Arkansas come check out the ES&NA railway. It's a train ride and dinner. It isn't kept up as well as I'd like to see but still fun. They started using an old diesel engine but the old steamers are still on the grounds and a few steam tractors. I go every couple of years and climb all over the steam engines and tractors. I remember a few years back when they still used the steamers I was driving north of town when they blew the whistle and I nearly had a wreck. I wish they would sell the place to someone who would restore all the stuff. Google ES&NA railway for a few pics.
