I'd mike the paper, and then (for example) Google .010 gasket paper, get a roll and cut it out myself. They are easy enough, tape a slightly bigger piece of paper than you need to the pump, take a ball peen hammer and tap lightly around the edges, and at the bolt holes, and the paper is marked for cutting...

the gasket should be as thin as possible without having the rotor drag the cover.. It might be 3-4 thousands.. You can put a straight edge across the case and measure the rotor depth with a feeler gauge.. .... if you use permatex you want a VERY THIN see thru layer on the gasket... normally you can soak the gasket in oil and Squeeze it with the cover..
a piece of construction paper or note book paper might the the right thickness.

Dave,
Yes, I have done that with several gaskets in the past. Getting lazy. But now would be the time to do it over. Story of my life. Thanks for the input. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

I smeared a very, very thin coating (like Steve said) on the pumps for my WD. Yes, plural... I rebuilt the original pump and then lucked into a much nicer shape AGCO retrofitted version so I went through it too before putting it back together. I used an old school shellac after flattening the bottom plate as much as I could with glass and a sheet of sandpaper.
Disclaimer... it's not running yet, ha. You're still way farther ahead of me on this CA than I am on my WD that keeps falling to the backburner. And I have a CA project that needs to go into the shop sooner rather than later. I can't wait to see your tractor back in tip top shape!

Guys,
Thanks for the ideas and support on the CA oil pump. I mean it is the heart of the system. I am great for doing things twice, or maybe even three times! So I may pull it off and clean it up again and start over I also got some good advice from a CA expert. That's what I like about this forum. Great suggestions, and recommendations! I should ask before I act. But that's not like me. More like the bull in the China shop! Regards, Chris and Cheryl

Allis folks,
So I took the CA oil pump back off. Several things to improve/ redo. First I forgot to put the gasket from block to the pump. Found the gasket in with the others in the gasket kit. Oops! Second I took the pump back apart and cleaned the mating surfaces. I reversed the vanes in the pump. I was told this may improve the oil pressure a little. All for that, and the vanes seem very happy reversed. Cleaned the outside cover plate. Very little wear on the plate. I suppose I could try to get those shallow grooves out of it? Was warned that Allis may have made a small and large oil pump. Well the gasket I have does not fit well, so maybe the pump I have is a big pump? Have to measure the gasket thickness and maybe carve one out of a sheet. Unless there is a large pump gasket out there? I did get the dial indicator to play with at some point too. Maybe use it to reset the valve clearance more accurately? Merry Christmas to all forum members and their families! Regards, Chris and Cheryl Edited by Sugarmaker - 22 Dec 2024 at 6:50pm |

Allis folks,
Our son Adam found a gasket on line that says its for a D10, D12 ..... It looks larger in the picture so we ordered one. We will see next week when it gets here. Here is the common paper gasket that I made. It doesn't look too bad. Rear wheel assemblies got some attention. Disassembly, then planning to clean and paint. These are not Allis rims as you have noted. IH style centers. and weights chopped up to match. So if the weather is warm enough I plan to put these centers in the E-tank, and wire brush the rims. Rims have been widened in the past. The tires have some age but should work just fine for a little puller in the stock classes. Happy New Year! Regards, Chris and Cheryl

Just a comment, we have been finding many camshaft oil pump drive pins loose in the bore. We always check on cam driven oil pumps B-G160 D15II. A loose drive pin will dump oil pressure at the back of the cam.

The Ford barn is a lot of fun for us. Trying to keep the Fords running along with these Allis tractors too! If you cant sleep, reading some of my posts there could help. Thanks for the hints on the pin in the pump. Of course I did not check that! :) Humm? (update) i guess I should ask more about how you check that and fix it if out of spec? Allis guys,
I got a start on cleaning the rear rims on the CA. The tires have some cracks for sure but should be ok for pulling for a while. The plan is to paint the rims a silver color. Maybe Rustoleum rattle can silver. Not sure on the center portion of the wheel color? Maybe the off white. Then I have to paint the partials of the weights also. The weights could be off white also. I have a plan to set up a temp paint booth in the shop. Crude but should help control most of the over spray. The Comet and the 32 have covers on them. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

Chris, I sure hate to see anything other than power adjust rims on a CA, but I'd reuse them too in your situation. You don't need tread adjustment for cultivating. New rims aren't cheap!

Allis Folks,
I worked on some of the CA parts today to clean them. Also worked on a temp paint booth. We have used paint strippers on this wheel center. Also a flat disc and light sand blasting. Even with that it still has a lot of pits and rough areas. This may be a candidate for some high build primer? In its early process here. A side project was to remove the old wheels from the sandblast cabinet and replace with some heavy duty steel units. I can now move it easily: Wheel weight sections through the E-tank and then lightly blasted: My temporary paint and or sanding booth. A old tarp on the floor. The 10 x 10 pop up. And then wrapped with 4 mil translucent plastic walls: Added 4 hanger rods for light weight painted parts in the future: Small steps forward, on the CA project. Hope things are good in orange land! Regards, Chris and Cheryl

Very nice. Ive had a similar idea for a paint booth. The battery box on my WD project has pitting as well. A combination of high build and glazing putty is what I am doing and should make a nice finish.

I like the paint booth Chris. I could do something like that on the North end of the new shop and paint with something other than a rattle can someday, maybe?

the only problem about a paint booth is the fumes and lack of fresh air..... a sucking fan on one wall and louver inlet on the other can help... Stay close to the INLET air and let the FAN pull the fumes away from you..(discharge OUTSIDE / under the garage door or thru a window ....Read the paint can and see what SOLVENTS are in it... A mask can help with the particulates, but they dont take out many FUMES... Be carefull and note what your spraying with.

Guys,
Yes some definite respiratory protection required. Haven't tried this in a confined area so may be additional work to do for air flow too. The idea/concept is to try to do some work in the winter on the CA project. Minimize the dust and or over spray getting on everything in the shop. Will advise how this works out. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

Allis Folks,
I have removed all of the paint from the IH wheel centers. Like a lot of other things they are not matched. I will try to find another to match as the one is very pitted. Using the E tank to help with most of this cleaning work, then a lot of wire brushing. Not sure how far I will go to smooth them? May be able to save this one, and make it look ok? I did get the new oil pump gasket. It is the correct large size. The one was for D series engines. So maybe this is a D series? Or the pump was changed? The ACS3418 is the large one which fits. The oil pump is secured: Re checked the valve gaps and all looked good. Next is clean up of the block and get it painted. Friend John and I also did some metal work on the bumps and dents in the hood. We are not body men! But I would like to improve my metal working skills. Also got a couple parts repaired by Mig welding up areas. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

You might want to build a framework in 2 opposing walls. One with a couple furnace filters to keep the dust from getting into the paint, and one for the fan ( also with furnace filters to keep the fan from turning orange).
Make sure you get a fan with a “non exploding motor “, otherwise the solvents in the paint will cause you a very bad day. I for one like having a Sugarmaker around for cool project reports. |

Straanger, Folks,
Some items in the shop: Of course I had to pound on it a little. Experts make it look easy! I will be happy if it looks good from 20 feet! I know paint don't pull! I still like some of them to look fresh. Grill shell. More pounding. Wire brushed the inside. Foot board Fenders still need work. Some rust out. may cut the brazed area out and replace it. Yea that's ugly. Maybe I can do better? Regards, Chris and Cheryl

im thinking if you paint the wheel centers up nice.. people will be looking at the hood / tank/ radiator support... and nobody will even notice the hubs are a little different, and one has a few dimples..

+1. If the part is sound the surface gives it character. New orange paint will make them fine. .
