Steve, Allis Folks,
Yes I guess we are at that level of this Refurb, Clean and Paint process. I did not do a complete new kit for the engine. Most of the engine components looked pretty good. So maybe saved a few dollars there?? Just a freshened stock HP CA engine. Which means we should see what they were capable of when new. Lots of other tractors in the 2500 -3000 lb classes have mods that may increase horse power? All that spends more money and not sure we would have any more fun?

I worked on the torque tube today:

Hope to get the transmission and rear end cleaned up tomorrow?

I did get the oil ring for piston #1 today. So will try to get that and other components installed. Was able to sand blast some CA parts and get them ready for primer soon.

Allis Folks,
 Not too exciting on this end. Scraping, cleaning, stripping paint, Electrolysis tank prep work, Sand blasting, Some welding, Grinding, A little assembly work..... Might shoot some primer in the next few days? Ordered some lifting eye bolts from McMaster Carr. This is way too much work for an old man!:) Perfect to keep me out of trouble!
 Cut the grass for the last time with the Jubilee and cleaned up the JD 272 finish mower.
Weather is supposed to be nice for a couple days. My friend John has been coming up and helping with parts clean up. 
New seals for the final drives should be here tomorrow. Going to try to do those while the rear of the tractor is in pieces. 
Hope things are good in Orange land!
We took the Comet out this morning for breakfast. It is handling much better after front end work and alignment. it is the main reason I did not get much done on the CA this year! We have had a lot of good times with it. No regrets. May replace rear springs this winter.

Tom, Folks,
 Glad the old Comet sparks some memories! Cheryl and I have had a wonderful time with this car since we brought it home in January.
I just did not get much done today. Helped supervise at Grandson Nic's new building. The crew and helpers have most of the girts on the sides and purlins on front trusses. Tomorrow the rear roof purlins and the lean to rafters portion will be set in place. 


I did look at the old CA engine. installed the oil ring and the other three rings on the number one piston. Inserted the piston in the block and the shims between the cap and rod. Torqued all the rod bolt fasteners to 35 ft.lb. and added the sheet metal lock nuts.

I had ordered several pairs of lifting bolts of different sizes, for various projects to be safer to pick things in the shop. These came from McMaster Carr and arrived in one day.

Have some 3M Bondo and  a new paint gun on there way also. Seems to be easier to order this stuff on line than any other way. Amazing technology we have available at this time, to get parts for the old CA.

Also now have the rear axle seals ready for me to get enough ambition to start that project improvements on the CA final drives.
We did get several components sandblasted and reworked. The worn clutch rod was welded and ground smooth to better fit the clutch pedal.

Allis Folks,
 Some items are coming together on the CA. Maybe we have turned the corner??
Things change, First gun I have had with the disposable paint cups. Just ordered a bunch of extra cups as this may stretch over several months or longer?

The tank has at least one dent that will need to be filled and sanded. It has been repaired once on the underside. I sandblasted it after it had been through the E tank.

I do have a bunch of parts that are pretty close to being painted.


Some body work will be required to the grill shell and the other sheet metal items.

The torque tube, transmission, and the rear end have been setting in the middle of the shop for several weeks. I have kept going around it cleaning and more cleaning, chasing threads, and more cleaning. 

I couldn't take it any more and mixed up some gray epoxy primer. Felt good to lay on some paint!

The cleaned valve cover got in the way and received some attention also.


Might as well try some PO#1 


I hope these small steps get me going on the CA project again.

Allis guys,
 Thanks for checking in on me! Our weather has been great so I took advantage of it today and painted some of the small items. Using a single stage PPG paint system for the top coat. 4 parts paint, one part catalyst, one part reducer.
This was a sticking point in my mind about painting in the shop. I moved the important cars and trucks outside, put down a old tarp and just began painting. The HVLP guns seem to keep the over spray to a minimum. I did not have a 'tarp line' on the floor afterwards. 
I really like these disposable paint gun cups. The soft liner collapses as the paint is used and there really is minimal clean up.
A lot of these CA parts had been cleaned ( blasted) for a while so there were about 40 items. I wanted to get some paint on them to avoid surface rust on the bare metal. 
My make shift paint booth was set up outside the east door of the shop. The epoxy primer was applied and about 1/2 hour later I painted the orange. After it dried I see a lot of places that I did not get the coverage i needed in some spots. ( but it is probably better than from the factory!) These small irregular parts are not the easiest to cover. And I was probably rushing a little too. So they may stay that way? Will see how bad it bothers me. I did not see any runs or sags so maybe there wasn't as much paint going on as I thought? 

A 10 x 10 easy up was the outside paint booth/ shelter. It made a great place to hang the smalls too. Yep the orange wind chimes!


A couple of the larger heavier rear hitch parts got some attention also. It doesn't look like much but I was whooped after setting all these up and trying to get paint on them.

We have a AACA car club dinner event in the shop Wed night so the body work on the CA sheet metal will have to be delayed for a while. I plan to build a wooden buck to attach the hood during the straightening process.

That’s a neat idea for the parts hanger. I will have to look in to getting one specifically for painting as I believe my accountant would have me shot if I tried using the ones we have.

 After reviewing the parts they needs more paint. I applied another coat to most of them today. 
Ordered final drive pan gaskets from Sandy Lake today. Not looking forward to that project.

Replacement of the pan gaskets should be easier since you have them off the torque tube.
It's the color tractor my grandpa had!

Chris, I've replaced several sets of those pan gaskets, on the tractor. Never thought it was that bad of a job. The ironic part is, they were supposed to be serviced every year! How many of them have never been off in 70+ years?

I put a drain plug in pan whenever I take the pan off. Should have been done at the factory.

Guys,
 Well John and I worked on the final drives and the front bolster. mostly cleanup. Moved a bunch of things in the shop to get some room and moved these heavy items under the jib crane. I removed a broken bolt by welding on a washer then a nut on one of their final drives. It will make a good balance picking point to install the drives to the rear end. 



Ok couple of things. The brake drum that I did not change out is about 1/8 thick or less, compared to the new one that is a 1/4 in thick. I really don't want to replace that old one but now would be the time to do it. Suggestions? This one is a little ragged on the edges also. Do these drums hold up well when they are this thin??



I pulled off the pan and removed the cap and bolt holding the axle in place. But the axle would not budge I took the snap ring off the axle, I hate those and this one was no different. After smacking the bolt in the axle several times and repeat. it was a no go. Seemed the axle and one of the bearings had grown together?
 I put the snap ring back on with two screw drivers. Not a easy task.
So I guess I am not putting a new seal in that drive!


I did recoat most of the parts that I painted a couple days ago. I had forgotten how many nooks and crannies in all these small Allis parts! Also got the E-tank working on cleaning up some of the IH wheel weights.
