I am in the process of painting and redoing a 1944 C. Had the Carb rebuilt and it started good. Removed the gas tank and painted. I installed a new wiring harness and new battery cables. Now it does not turn over fast enough to start and sometime starter will not engage without bumping it several times. Checked the battery and it shows 6.38 volts. Does starter need rebuilt? any ideas. Thanks

If you painted over the spot where the ground cable is fastened, that will affect your starter performance.  You need to scrape the paint off of that area and shine it up with some sandpaper.  I would check that first.

I concur.  The 6 volt system needs an excellent ground to function properly.

also, if you took the starter out and painted it, it will need the area that slides into the torque tube paint and rust free. Inside of the torque tube too. LOL Bob

And also, if you replaced the cables, 6V cables are normally 1 gauge. You can go larger if you want, but make sure the new cables you purchased are not 4 gauge for 12V. They will be waaay to light for the job... HTH

Hey Bob, If the starter could get its ground from the hole the starter slides into you would never need to tighten a battery cable to the battery. It gets the ground from the lock down locating stud in the side.

Dick, the bolt is mounted  through the torque tube which is also where the starter is slid into. They are one and the same.
If you didn't connect the battery ground cable to the battery you would have an incomplete circuit and nothing would work. Bob
