The gasket thickness provided in rebuild kit is .007” book says .001-.003” end play. Book says to lap body to reduce clearance. With out a gasket I have .003”
Thoughts on using .002 thick paper and coat with copper coat after lapping .002” off.

yes, you can use a piece of paper to make a gasket.. Dont use any sealer... little oil film will seal it.. The tighter the better.. If you can  get a couple thousandths off the housing, that would help.

These engines dont have but 15 psi of pressure when running... Can be less at idle, especially if you have excess clearance.. Spending some time to get the pump right is a good long term investment.

Ok good to know. As I lapped the body I’m noticing the factory didn’t get the pump shaft perpendicular to the sealing surface.
Steiner has .004” gaskets also. I’ll hold off on any more lapping until I try a thinner gasket.

Gaskets can also take a CRUNCH when you tighten them... Best way is to make a good guess, then install and TIGHTEN.. then see if the pump turns free and possibly measure end shake.
