A few months ago I torn down my 1940 B and have been working step by step putting it back together within spec's. ( a big thanks to ALEX at A&W) Today since it was so nice out today in green bay I decided I would install my newly ground crank with .030 under bearings. and install my new liners and 0-rings. When I removed my main bearing caps s a few months ago I marked each one so when I reinstalled I would know exactly which cap went where and in the same orientation. Today when I started with my first journal bearing with thrust bearing attached the cap went in the exact way it came out. The center cap and the front journal cap had to be flipped end to end so the bolt hole would thread in. My thrust clearance is now .003 which is good my crank bearing clearances are good but does it matter on the orientation on my last two caps?

If by end to end you mean 180 degree's you should be fine. Just can't move from one location to another. Can't put the center one in front and the front in center unless you get the block line board to assure proper the edge of the cap journal matches the edge of the block journal

They have to go back just like they came off.(providing they were on correct) Bearing caps go on with bearing tabs on same side of block.       MACK
