it was a few months ago I noticed my steering wheel was raising up when I turned right.  It would raise up so high it the pinion would pop out of the steering gear.  when I took it apart. (which is a pain in the ....)  I noticed the snap ring broke allowing the bearing to slide down the pinion.  the pinion is a bit chewed up and the groove were the snap ring went wasn't much of a groove any more.  I had a fella who was gonna braze a ring on it, but I didn't want to take a chance of taking the temper out of the pinion and it brake.

I took a small file and teadesly filed the groove for the snap ring until it would hold a smaller snap ring, put a washer above it, new bearing greased every thing and put it back together. so far it has held up.  Thank you for the replies.  I have wengers looking for one just in case.  Allis 1221g, I would be interested in buying it if your still looking to sell it.  I don't know how long mine will last and I can't be with out the tractor, especially with planting season coming up.  She's the only machine I have.

Yes, that may be the hardest thing to repair on that tractor.

If anybody has one for sale I'd be interested.  I don't know how long my repair will last and I'm not planning on getting rid of the allis any time soon.lol

After getting the RIGHT parts! the 5020 is back up and running.  apparently the previous owner had issues with the steering pinion and must not of found the part so he engineered it!

the pinion in my tractor was 1/4 inch less in diameter and had a bushing manufactured to fit between the pinion and the bearing.  the steering shaft was also milled down to accept a smaller u joint!

I was able to get the original parts from Gary and now the steering is tight with no play.  Sure hope there ain't a lot of them Frankenstein parts in/on this machine.  Thanks for all the help dt...
