I am interested in buying an allis 5015 or 620/720. Which would be a better buy for mowing and some light duty yard work? Are parts equally available? Is one more reliable than the other? I know the 720's had an Onan engine originally and that there are some after market engines which can drop in. What about the 5015 engine? What brand is it and are there replacements? Thanks for any info.

I would go with a 5015, more capable in my thinking.

I think for mowing, you'll like the hydro on the 620/720 better, plus a little more power, even more if re-powered by 24hp honda. I have a 720 with the 60" deck, and when tuned up it has plenty of power, but it does seem to need points attended to fairly often. I always wanted a compact tractor though. 5015/5020/5030. These compact tractors are made in Japan by Toyosha, sold as MF too around same era. 5015 is a tiny 3 cyl diesel, 5020/5030 use larger,  2 cylinder diesel engines. The 616/620/720 were built by Simplicity (AC co) with Sundstrand Hydro unit, and a 3 speed transaxle. (not sure who built transaxle) Good luck with whichever you decide. Ed.

I just got a 5015 last night and ran it around some today.  I also have 6 720 units.  As Ed indicated, if you are going to mow, the 720 will run circles around the 5015.  I have a tiller for my 720 and if there is a weak point in the 616/620/720 s....it is the rear PTO.  Counting doner units...both Allis and Simplicity...I have had or have a total of 9 units and only 2 good rear PTO s among the 9 units.  I will be looking at converting the tiller for my 720 to put it on the 5015.  The 720 rear PTO runs engine speed so without converting the existing tiller for the 5015's 540 PTO, the tiller will not have and rotating speed.  In other words, for tilling, there is no doubt that the 5015 will till around the 720.  Besides being a stouter PTO set up, the 5015 has a 3 speed tranny with 3 ranges, High, Low and Creep.  In 1st gear, creep range, it does move but you almost need to drive a stake along side to make sure it is moving.  I'm thinking about looking for some of those "Slow races".   I think I could have a winner.
Both units have their good and bad points.  The easiest way to resolve the problem is to get one of each. LOL.  Den

Den, I agree with you on the "slow race", I have put my 5030 in some local shows in the slow race and win every time.

Yes, I would agree with Kurzy.  While I think a lot of the 720 s and as I said, have 6 of them, from what little I have done with the 5015, the 720 will not hold a candle to the 5015 for a lot of things.  Den

I think you will have better luck getting parts for the 620/720.  Many more of them around and made in the USA.  Unless you have contacts in Japan, I think parts are hard to come by for the 5015.
