Ok so I'm new to being on this site all tho I have been taught. Lots on hear I'm 28. Went to Beloit Ks for diesel tec in 08 & 09 learn a good bit their after collage I really started buying 190 & 180 allis tractors for $500 to $1200 even a 200 & a D-21. Anyways back on track sort of. When scrap was high me & my father scraped. Around 200 combines so I got several tiers mainly 26in in wich if anyone around ks needs any should call me by the way. So we got L,M,F& Ggleaner 301 turbo & non turbo engines I have found that if I have to get the injection pumps to free up some times not no bigy I take the top off move the metering valve really free I don't need a run away sometimes I have to pumClean hi pressure diesel into. The pump while cranking engine helps to loosen the squeezer plungers no that not their technical name. So I ALLWAS get them fired up but I bet about % of the motors I do this to Allis 301s they spin a # 1 or # 2 rod Bering I no they have sat what I would call 10 plus years if the injection pump is sticky I'm wondering if it cause the oil has turned tarry & sat on the crank glazing it. Naturally I ALLWAS check oil pressure first thing never had a problem with oil pressure. I have thought about using a gallon or so of diesel & dump it in the oil to maybe lean the gummy up but never tried it I have had tractor motors do it to not just combine motors any one no anything or have any ideas I have 2 setting 301s right now I no the sat 10 plus years so I don't feal like spinning more cranks maybe I will pull the pan this time seems they last 2 miles then blow out the blow by Quickly & hard the worst part is a few made it 5 or 6 months I bet I have went through 10 good running 301s it's a shame.

Lol they at scrap scrap if I got the combines I don't junk stuff unless it's just junk We had a 180 since I was 9 & that ol 301 has held strong I love love love my Allis s & diesel mainly I started on tractors in 4th grade wth my grandpa on a C allis I admire it but it's hard to get much done with the older hydraulics & some of them without live power. My other Allis guys say it's bad luck too but dang I may be getting a d-15 diesel & 200. From a guy soon 200 sat 15 years d-15 25 years both in a barn a buddy noes some guy I got to go look @ them soon I shure wouldn't want to turn berrings in them. The last thing a guy needs is an accident that could have been avoided.

Well, I'd at least be draining the old oil out before I started one that had been sitting that many years.

The old 1950's JD manuals used to say to drain the oil and fill with gasoline and run for 20 seconds or so (can't remember for sure) so clean out sludge once a year. This was before modern detergent oils.

Oh a few some have spun cranks I have blocks heads Ect if anyone needs something I might be delt out of. When I Change them over in tractors some I have to modify the therastat housing Ect. But if they have the DM 4 roller I keep them on the motor have to drill holes in the timing cover plate & it has to be the plate that had a small adapter in front of the old common db pump. Not all 180 or 190s have that cover. I do this stuff cause I like playing. But I do like having reliable machinery to

I don't think I'd actually put gas in one of mine either. diesel might be a good option though like you said. Is there a way to prelube those engines? Maybe pump some oil through the galleys first to make sure they're not dry.

Well that's what I think I'm down to I'm thinking from now on I will pull the pan & pressure lube it through the oil pressure sending unit passage & make shure I slee oil come from EVERY berring. Just more hassle to find out if it's a good one but probable well worth it. I often have wonderd if the oils so settled that even with new oil just the seddiments are getting through but I don't no. It's ALLWAS #1& #2 rod berring if I remember correctly their last on the list to get oil

It has to be the oil circulation then. Use new filters or at least known good ones also.
How low are you idleing them? May need to bump up idle. My 301 does not idle low. |

You no it's hard to say how long I ever idled them I probably do tho cause I usually put water in them fist few minets & check for leaks. I have one 301 I think I got the timing gear one tooth to advanced I have to give it a sniff of ether and I can't let it idle below probably eight or 900 RPM . It's either that or else the Venes in the transfer pump aren't picking up until centripetal force is getting them that's a different story on its own.

you can safely run diesel fuel in an engine for a few minutes. (until oil pressure is built up), but never rev the engine! it's a cheap and effective engine flush! I have done that to several gas and diesel engines thru the years. but use new oil filters each time to change what ever you put back into engine. (drain old oil, put on new filter, fill crankcase with diesel, start and let idle until pressure builds, shut engine off, drain right away, change filters, fill crankcase with new oil.) look closely at the diesel you drained out, it'll show you what was inside that engine.

both Brent. also to any vehicle or motorized equipment I buy. sometimes there is a reason someone trades or sells something. and this is a cheap way of seeing if I should keep it or not! I've drained oil out of engines that looked like metal flake paint. those take 2 flushings, and I prolly lucked out as I was able to keep those engines (cept one combine engine) going for many miles and hours without problems. had one old tractor engine that had small chunks of gunk come out when draining the diesel. that one got another filter and diesel flush again too!

Kerosene and a qt. of oil works good too. Kerosene cleans better, but watch your oil pressure. When you flush the engine, pull the filter and cut the canister loose from the head and pull out the filter, then cut a section of the filter out and spread the element out and see what is in there. It can give you a good idea of how far you need to go.

I may be remember wrong. The JD manual may have said kerosene not gasoline. That would make more sense, and it was the 50's still lots of kerosene around.

Whenever I know I'm going to do an overhaul (especially an in-frame OH) I always dump 2 gallons of diesel fuel in the existing engine oil (yes, overfull) and let it run for 5 minutes just above an idle. Now, when you work on it, it has been washed very clean by the diesel fuel/motor oil mix and overfull with the crankshaft splashing it all around. Nice to work on. I'd never use gasoline.
