When checking the Hydraulic level on a 185 should you screw in the dip stick our just set it in the opening for proper level.I have a manual but unfortunately it doesn't specify.

I've always screwed it in,, seems the right way to do it- it seems like a poor design compared to the tranny fill, as dirt can fall into the hyd hole very easy

I'm with Doug, have always had it screwed in fully, wipe dirt away.  
Ops Man'l says; Lower lift arms, fully retract any external hydr rams, run engine 3 minutes at high idle, shut off engine. Immediately remove dipstick and check oil level.
