Just went to start the 180, when you turn the key the amateur poles down 20 A but no click at the starter no noise of any kind. Batteries are good.
Thoughts? |

others may have something more specific... but in general... when you turn the key to the first position "ON" you get ignition, lights, accessories, etc..... when you turn to the second position "START" you energize the starter solenoid.. If that is when you see the high amps, i would concentrate on the solenoid terminals , battery terminals, lug on the starter, and maybe the solenoid itself.
Normally thats the first thing you do is CLEAN all the connections.. Dont have to be white corrosion.. You can have a black oxide coating inside the battery clamps that will cause poor contact.. Wire brush, 100 grit sand paper every terminal. To check the solenoid, you can jumper across the BIG terminals with screwdriver or jumper cable (BIG) and see if you get a spark and KICK at the starter motor.

After I checked most things over there was no kick when I jumped the posts on the starter. Swapped starter from the 185 that I won’t be using for a while and this one works fine. Need a starter rebuild. Thanks for your reply.

thats odd that the solenoid did not click ....... OOPS.. is the solenoid / bendix all part of the starter ? That could explain no click.
YEP... my bad.... solenoid is part of the starter... Good job ! Edited by steve(ill) - 05 Aug 2023 at 4:06pm |

I had a similar situation on my 180D a few years ago and pulled my starter and took it in to a small shop here in Kansas to have it rebuild. The mechanic told me to stick around for a few minutes and he would open it up. When he did it was unbelievable how much dirt, weed seeds and chafe was in it. He cleaned it and lube a couple spots. Checked the brushes. Put it back on the testing machine and all was great. I asked how much and he told nothing. Just remember me when you have a real problems. I thru out $40 anyway and told him he needed something. When I left we were both happy.
