 Topic: Allis 170 corn picker

Would an Allis 170 picker on a D17 pick today's 200 bu corn yeilds? I am looking at picking 800-1000 bu per year. I know I might have to run in first but for that little bit it would not matter. I have a good Deere 300 pull type but always liked the mounted better. Dad had a New Idea 319 on a series II D15 and I have a nice Deere 237 mounted in the shed that I parked because it shelled to much corn on the ground. The Allis with the plates above the rolls should not shell as much. I have also considered an IH 234 if I could find Deere 3020-4020 brackets. Thanks Tom

It's all about tons of material per hr. If you can go slow enough, it will work just fine. Back in the day if it could handle 100 BPA corn at 3 MPH, it would today handle 200 BPA at 1.5 MPH.

At that slow of speed are the gathering chains going to breaking the stalks off before the stalks reach the snapping rolls? I have seen where the chains start pulling the corn up by the roots before it is far enough into the rolls. Anyone with experience? Thanks Tom

Hi Tom,
Was out your way a few weeks ago. Almost thought about stopping by again but didn't have the time.
As far as the picker, yes it will pick the high yields but it is really slow going. You will save a lot more shelled corn, probably more than any other picker. They do not husk that well either and are a very dirty machine to run. I bleed orange and enjoy my picker but if I were you Id do what Marlyn said and pick the end rows and use the pull type. Otherwise keep an eye out for a 234 IH.

I see a few 234's each year but have not been able to find the brackets for a 3020 or 4020. Every time I go to the sale at Waukon I think I should come and see your equipment. Nothing new in the way of Allis stuff here lately. Might get a clutch in the 15 yet before spring. Tom

Never seen a JD pull type "here", all N/I and Olivers. ALL of the mounted pickers were N/I, we mounted-dis mounted one on/off of a D-17 for 14 years :-)

Mounted JD picker for 3020 went to scrap for 35 dollars last year, and was shed kept. Should have bought it, but didn't... no JD to mount it on.

I had a JD on a WD 45 for several years. If you mount one on a different brand tractor, make sure you have the correct gear for the PTO. It must be matched to your ground speed. I bought the picker at 1 sale and bought the mounting bracket off another guy. I used it the 1st year slipping the hand clutch a lot. He found the correct gear in his shed and brought it to me. The gear speeded up the picker to match the ground speed of the 45.

When Dad quit farming, they had a New Idea two-row unit mounted on a JD 720 diesel. They'd had it on a WD-45 gas prior to the Deere. They filled all the corn cribs first with ear corn, then changed the husking bed to a sheller bed and hauled the rest of the shelled corn to town to the elevator. I was too young to help with any of that, but I remember Dad coming in at night, dirtier than you could imagine.

I have a 190 picker mounted on a WD (tractor is to small) that I pick 300 /400 bushel a year with. It is very slow and will plug up if you go to fast but it does work. If I go slow enough it picks good clean corn. It does work better if you wait later into the fall or winter as more leaves and stalk break off and blow away.

I remeber reading that those old 170 or 190 pickers won national picking contests back in the '60's so in good working order they could not have been too bad of a machine in the day.
