Good morning. I'm in the process of doing a major overhaul on my 160 engine. (Perkins diesel ). Since I have the motor out I want to overhaul the clutches. My manuals all say that special tools are needed. Does anyone know of somebody who can overhaul my clutch pack for me. I can have the flywheel done locally ( central Maine ) but I am in need of having the clutch pack disassembled, pressure plates ground or replaced and new fiber discs. Is anyone doing this ? I'm also in need of a ring gear and throw-out bearing.

They do require special tools to rebuild them. Rick Corder did mine this summer but he is no longer rebuilding clutches. Maybe he will chime in to suggest someone.
Pay attention to the shims at the 6 bolts that hold the clutch to the flywheel. Do not make the mistake I did, I thought the flat side faced in instead of the rounded side. The tractor had been split for several months and I had forgotten. Put the tractor back together and the clutch would not release. Took a lot of head scratching to figure it out. After using a flashlight to look inside, I could see shims at 3 different bolts touching the clutch. The flat side sticks out of the clutch pack when the rounded side is inward. My thought was that it may hit the bell housing. I was wrong. I have 2 manuals and neither advised of this critical point.

The shims allow removal of a shim at each bolt as the clutch wears. They are removed one at a time through the access port in the bottom of the bell housing. These tractors go a lot of hours before a rebuild is needed. Pretty neat feature.
