Hey there, I recently replaced the air filter on our AC 170,
but the housing, donaldson air vac assembly, is missing the cup and baffle. How important is this to put on ? It takes in air from the hose end usually when it's enclosed. Wondering if I should order this part or find it second hand. The price new is throwing me off a bit, with shipping it's a couple hundred dollars canadian for basically a metal bowl. Advice welcome :) ![]() |

If the filter has no holes in it and the wing nut is tight, the engine is protected. The filter will require more cleaning on your part with these parts missing. Buy a complete air cleaner assembly from a salvage tractor. Models 170-175-180-185-190 (not XT) are all the same.

My 2 cents: The housing and baffle accomplish two things. Outer steel protects the inner filter and the baffle catches the coarse material and dirt that gets sucked in so that it doesn't plug as easily. Having it makes your main filter lasts longer and easier to clean. At minimum I'd make a metal cover for the end to protect the inner filter and be on the lookout for a replacement.

The parts you need should be readily available from the used parts guys.

Time spent in parts book comparing air filter numbers will likely lead you to housings that are the same. I was looking for a filter housing for my 8070 after a accident and determined that some Gleaner combines used a housing that could be adapted to fit. I ended up straightening mine out but that was the next step if I couldn't get it back in shape.

Where are you in Canada? There was a 170 sitting in the boneyard at Lindsay Used Tractors (Lindsay, Ontario) a few years ago - not sure if it's still there.
