Hello All -
I'm looking at a HD6 in my area. Price seems reasonable, but I don't know much about dozers. Are parts readily availbale for an HD 6? (I guess from the tag its an HD-6B). The reason I ask is the sprockets look a little pointy and the owner says its 'slow to turn' in one direction.

Parts for undercarriage are getting hard to find , they share same parts as HD5 machines in sprockets, rollers , idlers , and new are next to impossible to find .
Slow turning in one direction ? should be the same either way as direct drive to either track , slipping clutch , worn brake band , or other problem in drive |

scrap price minus haulage and cut up. if it turns out to be more than a t**d, you can part the good stuff and get your money back on the rest. otherwise a labor of love

That undercarriage is junk. No one makes new undercarriage parts for these, so unless you know of a source for some used, serviceable parts there isn't much life left in it.

How the bushing is after running on that sprocket is another question , if worn on both sides FORGET IT . Some IH track will work but that supply is also hard to find .
Finding weld on sprocket rings next to impossible . |

In reality this is best a parts machine to keep others operational. Father Time has taken his toll on old AC machinery and although a very handy little dozer in it's day, that day has passed. All is not lost however. As I don't know your level of commitment, but a good welder/fabricator and skilled machinist willing to help out could make the track perform like new. Lot of time and work but those sprockets and chains, (unless cracked) can be rebuilt to new specification. The chinese can replicate the pins and bushings as they did mine and they seem to be just as good as original parts at relatively reasonable pricing. Again, this will take quite a bit of time and commitment, but can be done.

My dad and I are farmers so welding/fab isn't an issue and Dad was a machinist as well... The issue would be time. We don't have a ton of it with me having a full time job plus the farm. Thank you all for the advice, I'll leave this one where I found it.

I think that a wise decision. I say from doing the actual work needed when having much more time than anything else it is a lot of work but can be done. That's without even getting into the clutch(s) for the steering problem.

Interesting thread. For all yours info, down here at the bottom of the world, new zealand ALOT of HD6s were sold here new. And while alot of parts, engine parts especially, are very hard to find. We can buy brand new Track chain groups, rollers and sprocket rims here.
Is alot of us here still using HD6s for part time work. And between me and 5 other mates have at least 2 dozen between us.
In fact just bought a brand new set of sprocket rims for my HD6E. Made in italy by Passini group. Mind you we have a fantastic local undercarriage company who went out of his way to get us this stock. |

It's a shame here in the US that no one will IMPORT these parts , instead it's you need to find a newer machine to use and scrap what could be fixed .
Then it's not just 50's. 60's and 70's but even my Fiat Allis FD 5 that is hard to find parts for as used track was all I could find last time I needed replacement . |

The sprocket can be repaired. Pigeon Products sells inserts that can be welded to the sprocket. Or you can take 1/4 wall tubing cut to sprocket width then cut to form "C" shaped inserts. I also have 4 HD5 chains in my collection of parts.
