 Topic: AC engine Champion grader

Last summer we bought a 720 champion with an allis engine. How can I find out what engine it is? I think it is a 1984 model if that makes any difference. Drove it home a 100k and used it for about 20 or 30 hrs. Runs good, pulls good, but has a leaking rear seal and would like to replace it. Any suggestions?

My guess would be the 426 cube/3500/670-T engine. About 175 to 200 flywheel HP. If it was in a car the injection pump is on the right front corner and turbocharger and oil filters also on the right side. Engine tag usually on the left side of the block riveted to the block.

Not sure how to post a picture and there is no tag on the engine. Found some casting numbers. 08 F 79 and below that R 40 35 893. Also below that are HH and further over NW. I don't know if this helps any but it doesn't look the same as the engine in dad's old N5.

Well then, the next bigger engine is the 516 cube/685-T engine at 250 to 275 HP with the injection pump on the front LEFT of the engine. It's the only two engines probably used unless it is a really small grader using a 301 cube/649-T engine.

I read the specs on the grader, seems to me that it is more likely to need the bigger engine...

So I just checked again and I think it is the 426. Starter is on the other side, no bypass filter, different injection pump, and the turbo is mounted to the center manifold section. It doesn't even say allis-chalmers anywhere on it.

I used to sell these new a long long time ago. The 720 grader was rated at about 120 HP I think. There is a retired Champion guy floating around the the net that still has a lot of info on their machines A little googling should find him. Champion used a lot of off the shelf parts to that seal should be easy to find with just the dimensions.
