    Posted: 16 Sep 2018 at 7:42pm
We acquired a 7030 earlier this summer and I am getting around to changing fluids. The tractor has lots of hours on it (tach hasn't worked for yrs) but seems to run very well. The tranny shifts okay and works fine. However when I took off the "screen cover plate" to gain access to the pump screen I found several metal pieces on the cover plate. Mostly small pieces (filings) but a couple larger ones. Larger ones are less than a 1/4". Due to the age of the tractor, the fact that the transmission works okay and also that we will probably use it less than 50 hours per year, I'm considering just putting new fluid in along w/ filter and see what happens. Does anyone have a different opinion?

Probably from prior failures. I would do just as you are doing... You have 3 trans/hydraulic filters = don 't forget to pull the plugs out of the 'belly' filters and reinstall in the new ones. The trans filter is a spin on...
When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money..

I'd agree with tbran. I'd change the fluid and filters and run it.

When I was doing the filter changes on my new to me 7000 a few years back I found a whole bunch of big ugly in the sump. Based on the sealer on top of the transmission someone had obviously been in there.

When I bought the tractor the owner was 100% honest with what was wrong and what it needed, a transmission problem wasn't one of them.

A few weeks after I found the stuff I ran into the prior owner. First I stated very clearly that I knew I had bought the tractor as is, where is, and no matter how he answered I was still good with the deal and wouldn't be mad. I just wanted to know before I continued in case I needed to do some transmission work first. I told him I had found the big ugly when changing the fluid and asked if they had ever had any transmission issues. He said they had not and also guessed the original owner probably had and what I found was leftovers.

That was ~ 125 hours ago and everything works fine.

On a side note, the reason they took the tractor out of service was the PTO had started to slip. The hydraulic fluid I took out looked like a vanilla milk shake. I've only used the PTO for some light work since, but with new fluid and filters that too is working well.

Here is what I found in mine;
