I picked up this nice, original AC wagon in Illinois last weekend, and plan to make a project out of it... I restored a wagon gear two years ago and think I know where all the decals and stencils go on the running gear. On the steel box, there are decal remnants on the front and side panels, are there any more I don't know about? The literature I have suggests not, but it doesn't show every angle. One picture I have suggests there is a decal on the scissors part of the hoist. What looks to be the original ram is still present, but will need a fresh hose before I can check out the hoist and what I have. All the literature I have seen shows black, block type decals on the box. The decal remnants on this box show white-outlined "WD style" lettering. Any tips or insight would be appreciated.
Here's the wagon:

I have no clue about the decals but your wagon looks pretty cool. I have never seen one in person, maybe they weren't popular around here. I sure could use one of those for firewood. Good luck on your restoration. Looks like you have a pretty solid, well cared for wagon there.

Those wagons are the Holy Grail of A/C collectors, well not really but I have only seen them in pics and old advertisements.I also would love to have one and I am sure I will pay dearly for one if I ever find one. That one looks great.Excellent find.Very functional, could be used for several jobs.I would imagine a lot of them rotted into the ground in timbers and fencerows.
An older farmer I worked for when I was younger had a "utility" wagon that was a flat bed(wooden)that had removable side boards. There were two sets, one set was 2 feet tall and the other set was 4 feet tall. You could even stack the 2 foot set on top of 4 foot set to make 6 foot tall. Was pretty neat, think it was an older David Bradley.Never have seen one since.Have seen some green ones with basically the same set up go for 2-3 thousand $ Edited by Pat the Plumber CIL - 05 Jan 2011 at 10:14pm |

Thanks, guys, for the nice comments and encouragement.
Mike, good to hear from you! I bet it would look good pulled behind your picker, maybe one of these days when things are less hectic and I get enough worthy equipment gathered up it would be a hoot to join you guys for plow days and so forth!
Eric, I looked for two years to find my first AC running gear, going to auctions, scanning sale bills and putting up a "wanted" post every six months or so on the forum and eventually finding one through a response the forum. It wouldn't hurt to put up a "wanted" post every so often in the classifieds. This one was total luck, a friend mentioning to his Grandpa he knew a guy into AC equipment, then one thing leading to another.
Here's the simple flat-bed wagon gear I fixed up a few years ago:

Wow on the wooden wagon behind your tractor! I can't wait to see your hoist wagon when you get it restored. Although, it is neat to see it in original paint. I appreciate your lead comments on the wanted adds. I have not done that yet. Off to work...

Bill, Where are you located in East Central Missouri? I am in O'Fallon. There is usually a plow day every October near Marthasville that I have been to several times. Open to all colors but usually only a couple of A-C's there. One of the guys who lives close by has a couple extra Snap Coupler plows you could probably use if you brought one of your D-17's.

Check with Allen Dilg, he bought one a couple years ago that was in very good condition and had all the "right" pieces on it.

I am figuring shelled bushels of corn or soybean capacity on Bill's wagon. See if I am figuring correctly. Bed dimensions of 2'sidesx8'widthx11'long = 176cubic feet/1.1cubic feet per bushel = 160 bushels. Cargo weight of 160 bushels of 20?% corn or dry soybeans would be 60lbs per bushel. So, 160bushelsx60lbs per bushel = 9600lbs of grain. |

Eric, I would guess that is a 6 foot wide (maybe 7) wagon.

Thanks again everyone for all the nice comments and info.
Chad- Do you still have your 601 gear? Unfortunately, this particular wagon is built on a 501 gear or I could have used the leftover stencils from our 601's :-(
Rick- Yes, Mike is right I'm down here in Jefferson County. I do have a snapcoupler plow I could use but would need to brush up on my plowing technique, which is lacking :-O I believe we've met, didn't I pick up a sc disk from you a few years back?
Kurzy- Thx for the pic of your nice box wagon, that's a dandy! I notice the "Allis Chalmers" decals on your box are a bit different style than the remnants on mine. From pictures and AC literature I've seen, it looks like they did change over the years. I notice yours has an ID plate on the box itself, mine is missing that if it ever had it. Is there another ID plate on your running gear?
Eric- The dimensions of the box are 6'W x 12'L x just over 2'D Based on an evenly struck load I get 131 bu. ? Edited by Bill (E.C.MO) - 07 Jan 2011 at 5:19pm |

Hello Bill!! John E.C. IL When't and looked at the wagon for me before the auction and said that it was in good shape, but like others have said they AIN'T cheap, there also was an AC running with hoist that we bought. This summer I restored 3 AC running gears, and made enought lumber out of used telephone poles for 3 8'x18' racks.

Howdy Bill,
Yes there is also an ID plate on the runing gear. Now some of the barge boxes also had steel floors or wood floors. I have seen both. My is wood. You can come up with a lot of uses for these boxes.
