It's everywhere. Not clueless. No respect for private property
A photographer once upon a time thought our place was a great spot for some portraits. Had to call sheriff to get them to leave

.

Times have changed.

When I was a kid we had some old junk 50s trucks and cars near the woods. Photographer asked at the house first if he could get pictures. We said ok.

If they want to take pictures sounds like it innocent enough until something is missing. Pull out your phone and take a picture of them and their vehicle and license plate.

You may want to put up “No Trespassing” signs just to cover your rear. If they get hurt while rambling around guess who they will want to blame. Not many these days take responsibility for their own actions, it’s always someone else’s fault.

Yep. That’s my point.
Items stolen. Meth labs. Who knows what one can stumble over and file suit.
No trespassing signs are not entirely effective

We put up no trespassing signs when we started building the farm. Seems like when we put the signs up, people trespassed more just to see what we didn't want them to see

Dave, sadly it's not all states. -

Purple Paint Laws by State 2024

There are different colors that people associate with different things. For example, most people associate a red light with “stop.” That is why people generally come to a stop at a red stop sign as well. In addition, when people see green, it generally means “go.” That is what people associate with a green light.

Purple also has a very interesting meaning. If there is purple paint somewhere, it typically means no trespassing. Purple paint could signify that someone is about to step onto private property, which means that if they are there without permission, they could be arrested for trespassing. Is this an actual law? There are several states that have interesting statutes related to purple paint.

What States Have Purple Paint Laws?

Even though there are a lot of people who generally accept that purple paint means no trespassing, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is legally enforceable. For example, New York does not have a purple paint law. This means that if there is purple paint somewhere in New York, it doesn't mean anything beyond the shade of its color.

On the other hand, twenty-two states do recognize a purple paint law. These states include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. This means that landowners could indicate that their land is off-limits if they paint the trunks of trees near the perimeter of their property purple.

It is important to note that allow these laws are called purple paint laws, not every state requires that the paint used to mark trespassing is purple. Idaho and Montana use orange paint instead, and Maryland uses blue oil-based paint. Private property in Virginia can be marked with purple or aluminum paint. Purple paint is also only used to stop hunting, fishing, and trapping on private property in North Carolina.

Joe, I agree that Georgia needs a purple paint law. The no trespassing signs are more to give the landowner a small degree of legal protection than to stop trespassing.

We’ve had the purple paint law as long as I can remember.
Like Tyler says it’s just a sign that I have something I want them not to see.
A couple years back a guy asked me if I had any tractor wheels for sale. I said no. He then says , well I seen some behind your shop that look like the size I need.
I told him that if he didn’t get off my property and stay off they’d have to haul him off in the gut wagon.

I ended up painting Purple in specific areas that have become 'Frequented' by the idiots, put up a Wireless Game Cam that reports to my phone as well, just call County when the morons show up these days and as such have a semi permanent open trespass complaint on file with them so these people DO get charged.  Have not as yet had a Repeater, just new ones.

I have never heard of a Purple Paint Law until this thread! Interesting. Here I guess our only option is no trespassing signs.

I had never heard of this either until about 2 weeks ago. We were deer hunting in Lucas Co. Iowa. Started seeing the purple paint, buddy says they paint them that way in Missouri to signify no trespassing. Interesting to see Iowa has that law too.

Not going to run out and paint my posts though, very little trouble with trespassers, well recently anyway.

I had not heard this ether.

So the generic no trespassing signs in the hardware store should be on a purple background. Which I don't think I have ever seen.

There is still a one room school house up the road 2 miles. Used until 1964, then a community meeting place. The community kept it up but after 40 years of no money being spent it did not look good. With the old timers that had hilltop home looking down at it moving to town, vandalism rapidly got worse. With the school district being propositioned to sell, the community got together to save it.

After spending close to $200,000, fixing foundation to roof it looks so much better and vandalism is nil thankfully. I realize it is not posable to do that with many old farm buildings used as storage.  But do what you can make it look cared for, generally pays off.

Living in commuting distance to two big cities AND among the Amish has its challenges. People have a lot of nerve.
Phone rang one day and it's Eli Yoder the Amish man. He wants to buy our place. He said he has gone through the barns and they are perfect for him but the house was locked so they could not look. Astonished I asked who told you it was for sale. His answer? Nobody, they just want it.

Couple summers ago a couple stops and pulls thier BMW over in the front yard. Watching from the kitchen they set up a tripod and start taking pictures. Ok I'm curious now so I walk out there and ask what they are doing? Answer? We are going to purchase a country property and your place just made the top of our list. Uh, OK do you have a pencil and paper? Yes they said with a smile and I wrote my name on it and handed it back. The lady says what about contact information? I said all you need is the name. Search obituaries now and then and when it comes up the place MIGHT be for sale.LOL

We have a small orchard out by the road. Most every year I have to run somebody off who is helping themselves to what "you are not using".

The purple paint laws were inacted to save a land owner with signs every 100 yards . Paint replaces sign and can not be torn down or shotup . Purple paint will stand  out as it's not a normal color in the landscrape . Two 4" stripes at chest level around tree or post .
