Having a recurring problem all spring with our motorhome. Engine and chassis is a 94 Ford F-53, w/460 EFI., just under 40,000 miles,
New fuel pump (year and half ago) New fuel pressure regulator (last week) New throttle position sensor (today) Changed fuel filter 5 times (since Jan.) Engines cuts out after 10 miles or so, bucks, backfires, limp to the shoulder shut motor off and immediately restart and your good for any where from 1 mile to 10 miles. It’s back at the shop Any hints would be greatly appreciated |

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

What’s really odd is, every once in a while you can get a solid 75 miles or so with no issues at all, mechanic claims everything shows good when ‘plugged in to the scanner’.

Have him verify fuel or ignition issue.
If he can't verify then it's time to find a different shop. If it turns out to be Ign related,If yours has a distributor, you may look into it. My neighbor went thru Hell with a scenario as you describe and it turned out to be the Distributor. was low miles also. |

If it has a distributor check the ignition module inside the distributor. Sounds like the problems dad had with his dodge. His would run 10 or 15 miles and just die. By the time they towed it to the dealership, the module would cool off and it would run. He finally left it at the dealership, the parts man drove it till it quit. They were close enough the dealership, when it was towed in, it had no spark. That's when they found the ignition module was bad. It started acting up about 6 months before they found it.

still thinkin on this... ..one of those gotta be there to see it happen... Have you dropped the tank and looked real good inside to be 100% sure it's CLEAN ? NO water, gunk, junk, etc. Is the fuelpump intake 'sock' CLEAN..?? Since no idiot lights come up,it doesn't sound 'electrical' bit ... engine 'cuts' out . ?? hard like dead or sputters, then dies a slow eath ?? As it restarts 'fine', after what maybe a minute or two ?, unlikely 'electrical' as in somethin over heating, more a gas delivery problem. My '86 F150 started to die going up the 'hill' and limped into garage(ran better at low roms.) It was the fuel filter under the driver's door. My BX23S has 2 inline filters...any chance your truck has a 2nd 'somewhere' ? it'll be intersting to hear WHAT fixes the problem !!! Hopefully real soon too. Jay |

It does a very, very slow decline in speed, it may take 2-3 miles of baby-ing,or feathering the accelerator then idle to the shoulder and turn off the engine, immediately restart put back in drive and away you go like nothing happened for 1-10 miles, then repeat.
Have not dropped the tank, yet. |

That sounds like 'junk' pluggin up one of the filters(stuff gets sucked onto it), then stop, that allows 'junk' to fall away back into tank, then vroom..away you go AND the cycle repeats itself..... I've got to replace the tank on my '97...plan to remove box for easy access...

I think what HG described is peculiar to Dodge and the ignition design. I had the exact same thig. It was the ignition pick up coil. Not the same as the module in HEI type ignition. It looks to me like some type of scanner could be put on it and something would show up when it conked. My first thought would be a pressure gauge on the fuel at he engine, just thinking.

We had similar issue in early March while we were travelling in Texas. We change the fuel regulator and the ignition coil with no improvement. Finally changed the fuel pump in the tank has been running fine ever since. By the way changing the fuel pump is a 6 to 8 hour job if everything goes reasonably well. The best way to diagnose this is put a fuel pressure gauge on the engine drive it down the road if you don’t get close to 40 pounds pressure at full throttle here is something wrong. Some of the RV forums have good information on these issues.
Good luck! |

To me sounds like a plastic bag inside the tank.
