Good Morning . . !
I have owned My Tractor since 1982 I recently did a small rebuild on the engine on my 916 H . . New Piston..rings..rod..seals..ponts..plug...gaskets etc.. Muffler..not OEM cuz I couldn't find one anywhere. We turned the key..and nothing..! Starter works good..turns over only after connecting straight to "positive". Having an OEM Ignition switch..I replaced every wire with new connectors. I have a New battery..new cables. I went by the Wiring diagram from my OEM Book..and re-verified with everything I could find online. I have 12.96 volts at: the Battery side of the solenoid. the Ignition switch. the both sides of the Ammeter the coil..points..etc. the center post of the start solenoid when I turn the key ( which my guess is the blue wire that connects all the safeties together..according to the wiring diagram ) ....But NOT the side of the solenoid that connects to the starter.. Trying a new solenoid from a 94 ford explorer..I get the same result.. ...Am I overlooking something...? Or is the Solenoid Bad..? Like the screwed op saying goes... "It worked when I shut it OFF . . . ! " Any Help would be Wonderful . . .! . . . Rodney . . . |

First, I am no expert on these things, but my 912H did a very similar thing. After my initial testing, I thought my solenoid was bad. I replaced it and it did the same thing. Did some more testing and figured out my PTO lever safety switch was bad. Replaced the switch and has been fine since.

Have you done any painting?
My son had that problem and the solenoid was not getting ground because of the fresh paint.

when you jump across to make it crank do you have spark ? was the original solniod have three terminals or four ? power from bat. to sol. also has to have key wire hot all the time wire on terminal s sould be hot when key is in start position that sould connect the solniod and sould sent power to starter there sould be less than 1/2 volt drop through the solnoid if there is a ground terminal on solniod then it could be connected through one of the no nc swithes to make up the ground or it may be grounded to frame

Gary .. It was a ground problem...like you said..
..and it was the very same reason...fresh paint... Turns over really good....unfortunately...it missed like like it had bad gas..so..I drained the gas tank..even though there was enough fresh gas in it to get it running to seat the rings we had replaced..there are all new gas lines on it...My Son took the carb apart and cleaned it so it's all nice and shiny. Replaced some things inside with a genuine Kohler Carb rebuild kit..gaskets etc... It still misses..back fires.. I'm putting in a new set of Kohler points tomorrow... the After market ones I ordered just arent good quality.. ...Many Thanks for all your help.. . . . .Rodney . . . |
