Ok I'm looking at trading my cub cadet for one. Its a 912 Hydro. Has a bad axle seal on the back(can they be bought still), and needs the carb rebuilt but the engine is a low hour kohler 12hp. Anything I really need to watch? Its not in bad shape....paint is decent. Whats it worth for cash so I really know what I'm looking at? Did the mow decent? Any info is helpful. Thanks.

You'll never find anything that mows as well as a Simplicity made tractor. Axle seal could be a worn bushing bearing. Some people just replace the whole rear end rather than do a tear down. This is a real good made tractor but I think you'll find it underpowered w/ a 12HP engine. They made these tractors with 12, 14, and 16 HP single cyl. engines and then up to 19HP twin cyl. I think you'll be a lot happier with more power from the start.
If everything is in good shape I'd say 250.00
Likely has the smaller 42" deck with 12 HP. I'd save up and get more power and larger 48" deck.

Thanks for the info. I'm used to that 14hp kohler in that cub and a 44 inch deck and it works well. Just havent had any experience with AC lawn equipment. Id really like a 917 or 919. I cant afford a 620 or 720 lol. Its not even the fact I really NEED the tractor either way....I have Gravely's for yard use and the cub was a freebee from my wifes Grandfather...needed a bunch of work but after I got it fixed it mows great but I hate owning an IH lol

Is the bad axle seal on the right side??  If so it could be a cracked axle hollow shaft, it cracks in a keyway and looks like the seal is leaking.   If not fixed the axle will eventually break off and you loose all control of the rear wheels (free wheels).  Been there, done that.

You will like the mowing job it does.
The universal answer to all questions is yes, how much do you want to spend?

So far it sounds like I want to pass on this 912. I'm thinking I'll wait for a 917 or 919. Only reason I want another mower that isn't this cub is I have a trac vac setup and it knocked the seals out of the rear of my Gravely because of the piss poor way they made their hitch. It cant handle the weight hanging all the time. I need something I can run mounts up to the frame and it looks like I can on the 700, 800 and 900 series AC's.

The 12hp would be plenty of power for the 42" deck.

Guy that has it got ahold of me. He said it never leaked until it sat all winter. Then when he started using it he found it started leaking and leaked most of the fluid out. Sound like a cracked rear or not?
