Does anyone know the trick to get the back bolt tightened in on an 8550 starter. Starter needed a new solenoid which was the easy part. By the way, we found the back bolt out of the hole just wedged between the block and the starter when we removed the starter to get it tested. Able to get an OEM solenoid for it but no way can we get the back bolt of the starter tightened in. You can only get at it with an extension that reaches to the front of the starter but then the angle of approach is all wrong. Please tell me the Allis engineers didn't design it so you have to remove the oil cooler housing to get at the back bolt. Sure hope someone can shed some positive light on this.

Dale, shallow socket...and a swivel if I remember correctly. But I am pretty sure i did one without the swivel...some starter housings are slightly different from others I have noticed on that engine.
Still have your 305?

Thanks for the info. We've tried the shallow socket as well as a 5/8" snap-on swivel. Just can't seem to get it. the angle of attack with the long extension is a bit off. Yes, still have the 305. Trying to keep hrs off it so we use the 8550 for our grain buggy. Have bought a Steiger PTA325 out of Saskatchewan for our tillage tractor.

I have replaced a lot of Delco starters on truck engines and I suppose this is the the same since you say 5/8 12 point socket.
I use a 12 point 1/2 inch impact socket and the shortest 1/2 inch drive wobble extension, (an inch or so long) and a medium length 1/2 inch drive wobble extension to reach past the starter case then a long handled 1/2 inch drive flex head ratchet.

A lot of them seem to have lost the twelve point bolt over the years sure is nice when they have it still.
