So I got the 8030 fwa back in the shop, to take a closer look at the steering. What I'm seeing is....the steering wheel spins freely in either direction, no matter if engine is running or not. Once in a great while, I can get a slight movement of the front wheels when steering left but never anything to the right. The part I wanted to ask about is......it appears that the steering shaft is turning at least at the rubber insulated joint....I'm not sure if the splines are stripped, where exactly would they strip? On the steer pump itself or the actual shaft at bottom of steering wheel. Again I'm just helping out a neighbor so I don't have a tech manual or a parts diagram of ant sort.

Well I went ahead and pulled steering pump off and yes splines are bad . Checking with one of the few AGCO dealers, anywhere close, the splined shaft is NA. They are still checking about the pump

As I said earlier, if the tractor is a 2 Wheel Drive, I'd be finding a used steering control valve from a 7010-7080, or another 8000 series. I am fortunate to have multiple salvage yards an hr or so from home, so for me this is easy. The shaft, I might have to take one from another model AC tractor and shorten it and figure out how to attach it to the steering column. The splines are the same from a 170 to the 200 and 7000-7080.

One of my 8070s stripped. Somebody put the keeper bolt in the soape between the shafts instead of in the slot in the shaft in the steering valve. Slid the connector down to the right place and put the bolt inthe right place. Hasent given any more trouble

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. This is a FWA model and the shaft splines and the internal pump splines are pretty much gone

I'd have to do some research, but a 2WD steering control would probably work but would take another turn or two of the steering wheel to go full right to full left and vicey versey.

I'm pretty sure that I replaced a bad steering motor on an 8030 FWA once with a 7000 series motor. It wasn't a spine issue, as I recall. That would have been an odd failure, as those steering motors have been almost bullet proof forever. Other than an occasional leak,they just don't give many problems. And they only seem to leak at the top seal area. The 8000 series used an o-ring with a Teflon ring instead of a quad ring to seal the shaft. That was supposed to make them steer easier. I have heard of removing a couple of the leaf springs in the motor to make them steer easier.
