Stuff I learned the hard way. There is no adjustment slots for the starter but they will move enough for adjustment - snug up the starter drive to the ring gear as close as you can without binding. Don't just bolt them up. You have to remove the flywheel on the 616 to adjust the starter - the 720 can be done without removing flywheel. You may need a washer between the starter & engine to get it closer to the ring gear.
Found a replacement starter - goes on JD skid steer 14, 24a, 70 & 90 - also continental 36 hp. Tell your starter guy to find the Lester catalog number 17332. Made by Mitsubishi. It fits 616 620 & 720 Onan engines. It has 3 holes and uses different holes for 616 & 720. $125 - Do not buy it from a JD dealer - Green costs a lot more. While you have the engine out - plan on a voltage drop from all the safety switches and old wire which will result in a click by the solenoid. I ran two wires from the solenoid up to the dash to a cheap push button starter switch and left all the other wires in place. You can also put on another solenoid to the solenoid or Deere has a little gizmo that boosts the voltage ( $20 or so) - on all the new stuff - small and effective my starter guy says. I think the two wire deal is simpler and cheap. After you take out and replace the engine a dozen times - it gets pretty routine.
