My 1980 7060 has always had the issue of when first started the tach didn't work and the alternator light stayed on until bumping the throttle up just above idle. This evening while moving wagons around the alternator light is on and no tach at any rpm. Anyone have any ideas? I am a fair mechanic at best and will get some help testing the alternator. Thanks.

Sounds exactly like what my 7010 did. Had the alternator rebuilt. Problem solved.

Yep your 7060 needs a refresh on the alternator. Just went through that with my 7060. Unless you want to pay the bucks for the original Niehof you will have to find a Delco. There is a Auto Electric repair shop in
Coldwater Mi named Thatcher's that can fix you up for around $100. |

Most don't charge until they get some RPMS. Might as well buy a alternator. MACk

We discovered that the post was loose, I am ordering the Delco from Shoup, I can't wait for a rebuild, will take this one for rebuild as a spare if I don't have to send it to Shoup. It looks like the Shoup Delco has an adapter harness on it, can I just take it off and plug and play since I already have a Delco? Thanks for all the replies!

Ben, your alternator is a Delco 3 wire? If it is you can buy a direct replacement from Shoup.

The one I have is a Delco with 3 wires coming from the tractor in one connector and 2 wires on a post. I ordered the Shoup Delco type with the double pulley. It has an adapter for the Niehoff that I hopefully can just take off and plug and play. Thanks.

I have installed the new alternator from Shoup. When I start the tractor I have a working tach and the alternator light is off. After a few seconds the alternator light is on and the tach quits. What's going on here, please?

Since that is literally backwards I'd say something is wired wrong

Probably loosing ign voltage to the stator, you can check that with a test light at the alt connector. I believe the voltage comes for that unit comes off the circuit breaker on the key switch, they do get hot and go bad. That breaker also runs the electric lift pump, could be a high draw there.

We finally got to take a look at this, LB nailed it, a bad circuit breaker behind the dash. Thank you all.
Well, now I have a good spare alternator. Next time I will TEST the alternator before replacing it. Edited by Ben (MI) - 18 Jan 2020 at 5:11pm |
