I have a 7000 special with the 4 speed and high, low, and medium shifter. Im having several problems. 1. I can't get it out of gear unless it is on a level area or still rolling. 2. It has just recently developed a delay from when you release the clutch until the tractor starts moving. Its only a few seconds but usually its instantaneous. 3. I have a hell of a time getting it in gear especially when its cold. I am worried that it needs to be split. Any recommendations?

Do you have the transmission brake adjusted properly? Check the owners manual. I start mine in gear when it's cold to avoid the gear grinding or let it warm up a while before putting it in gear.Hopefully the filter change will help the delayed clutch action.

as stated the trans brake may need setting up, the delay indicates you have a black belly or wet clutch unit , correct? If so the delay could mean a warped clutch pack which can also relate to not being able to get out of gear. AC had problems with gear jump out so they put a negative back cut to 7000 gears to prevent this. IT also prevent one from shifting out of that gear if there was a positive torque load powering the tranny.
One can remove the shift valve body from the rh side and inspect the clutch plates. In neutral one should be able to spin the packs by hand easily if all is ok.
There is the posiblility of a stuck valve in the shifter as well.

The black tractors need to warm up a little before they shift. We had one on a loader, in the winter time you had to put it in gear before starting the tractor, otherwise it would grind the gears badly. Put it in gear, start it up, back out of the shed, then it would shift ok. I was thinking warped clutch plates too, thats kinda a symtom of both problems. |

I adjusted the trans brake on our 7000 maroon belly today. It seemed to grind a lot and felt soft releasing. After I adjusted it the pedal didn't seem to change much on hoe it felt but I drove for about 20 minutes or so and it didn't grind any. A couple times it didn't want to go in or out of gear but after I release the clutch and press it again it would shift fine.

Back in 1976 when we owned a 7000 - I heated the gear shift lever just below the bend in the lever and bent revolved shift lever 90 degrees anti clockwise. Same postion as an Oliver 550 to have the shift lever away from your legs . Worked cery well.
Kept this tractor for 6 years and only problems - replaced the altenator. Traded tractor with original batteries for a 7010 ps which was a much heavier and better overall tractor.

If it don't want to come out of gear, let the clutch up a little to release the trans brake. Then hold clutch down for a little while befor trying to put it in gear. Give the brake time to stop the gears befor trying to put it in gear. MACK
