    Posted: 07 Jun 2016 at 7:20am
Hello all,

I have a ac 653 dozer.  I have been working the site for my brother in laws house, and, in addition to finding many leaks and non functional gauges, I have been having a difficult time keeping the clutch (particularly on the left side) adjusted right.  This machine has a torque converter with the power shuttle, so no main clutch.  It is pedal steer.

It has the large lock nut with the 3/4 adjusting rod on the side inside the track.  I see in the service manual, and from conversations with other guys, that this is how you adjust it.

Does anyone know the proper procedure?  The most I have now is "adjust it and then get on a slope and make sure that it rolls with the clutches in."  Is there a starting point?  a CCW or CW adjustment direction?  Brakes seem to work fine, but clutch on that side seems to go out of adjustment everyday.

Thanks!

What is your problem? Does  it not engage, or disengage? Clutch is simple on that machine, not that easy to get at though. You should take a look at it from the top inspection cover. Let us know. We can go from there.

issue is that it wont disengage.  I will fiddle with the adjustment rod (just taking blind guesses at CW or CCW turns) then it will seem to work fine or a couple of hours then not work good again.

What should I be looking for with the top cover off?

You can see where the throw out bearing and fork are. I don't have my manual close to look at. Could be worn to the point that bearing will not ride against fingers enough to disengage.IIRR , i think you will have to screw the bolt cw into crawler, leaving less sticking up thru lock nut on outside of case. Sounds like you are close to needing a clutch rebuild. HTH Tracy

I believe that the side I am having trouble with had some new discs shortly before I acquired it.  Is there a way to "feel" how far in the adjustment rod should be turned as a starting point? Lots and lots of thread left.

I have an HD4, earlier but real similar. The best method is by the manual. Mine is not here. With the cover off, you want the throw out bearing not touching the fingers in release mode. When pedal is pressed it should release clutch pack and then apply brake. You said your machine was pedal steer. Not sure if your machine has a slave cylinder on clutch  or not. Pretty sure it is hydraulic disengage on clutch pack. Main thing is this, when disengaged pressure plate should have no drag on clutch pack. When you engage( let off of pedal) it should allow the pressure plate to relax and pressure plate fingers should not rub or touch throw out bearing. When clutch disc wear, fingers will increase in height, which in turn lessens the free travel before fingers and bearing touch. HTH Tracy
