I only had a 616 for a short time when I bought a 720 and 616 from the same guy.  Sold the 616 to finance fixing up the 720.  These are what I remember as differences between the 616 to the 620/720.
The carb is differenct as you said.  The air cleaner is different.  Of course the horsepower is different.  I'm guessing that there may be more differences (besides decals and what I mentioned) but I do not know any other than what I listed.

is the air cleaner different simply due to the different carb size?

The CCKA carb mounts to top of manifold. The CCKB mounts to side of manifold. HTH Tracy

On the 620/720, what is the cylindrical black part between the
manifold, carb and air cleaner. Maybe a crankcase scavenger gizmo?

Then look at the complex 90 degree formed hose connecting the air cleaner and intake side of the carb. Can that be purchased new?

And last, is the air cleaner a little on the small side?

Some of the wiring is a little different also. Routed and color coded differently on some circuitry between the 616 and 620/720. Wiring and color coding the same on the 620/720. Seems like the 616 is the morphidite of the three.
