Hello, Needing some help... My 53 ca will not start, not even with a jump. Is there more than one fuse on this machine. I found the one that is in the ammeter box and it is not blown. All battery cables appear to be tight and clean. The starter would at least attempt to roll over or click with low battery, but will not even do anything even with quick jump from charged 12v battery. What could i be missing?? Thanks in advance for you suggestions.

I would suggest tracing the starter circuit and carefully check each connection. I can post a wiring diagram if you need one. Especially check your ground and contacts inside the switch (on top of the starter). I bet you will find a corroded or rusty connection somewhere.
I am assuming that you have checked the battery with a voltmeter and it shows in excess of six volts.
I am not sure what you mean about "more than one fuse". It sounds like there may have been some modifications over the years. The only thing I can think of on a 53 CA in the ammeter box that would look like a fuse would be the resister for lights/charging system.
Next I would remove the starter and clean where the starter nose cone meets the "bell housing". Clean the starter bolt too. Normally I recommend checking to make sure you have heavy 0 or 00 battery cables, but it sounds like it has worked in the past.
Six volt systems require much more amperage than 12 volt systems. Amps are carried through good, clean connections and heavy gage wire. I usually use water as an analogy: You can get water out of a both a drinking straw and a fire hose, so just because you may read 6 volts on a voltmeter (you have water), the connection may not carry the necessary amps to spin everything (you don't have the necessary flow).

Hook the hot side of the 12 volt battery to the starter post. Then touch the neg. side of a jumper wire to the starter body. That ought to tell ya if the starter is working or not. Unhook the tractor battery first.

Thanks for the advice Ryan, thats where i will start. With the starter. The connections are old, but just had been gone over by a mechanic friend this past summer. I didnt even think of the switch on the starter itself. i will let you know what i find.

Ryan, If you don't have fuse on your light switch, yours is the one that is altered.

Yeah either that or, more likely, my memory isn't as good as I like to think it is! LOL-- A quick look does in fact reveal a fuse on the light switch, sorry that I wrong/remembered incorrectly.
Of course, this should have no bearing on his starting issue, and I cannot think of multiple fuses in the B/C/CA wiring diagram. I stand corrected, thanks Charlie.

I had a dead cell on a 6 volt battery and even with the quick start she would not roll . new Battery did the job.

53CA, either the switch on the starter is bad or you don't have a good connection somewhere. Connections include the contact points of the starter to the block. Sometimes people paint a tractor in pieces and get paint on things that don't need it, like the starter where it contacts the housing.

Hmmm - any chance that the starter is jammed in the ring gear? I'd do as suggested above and pull the starter. While you have it out, test it with cables from a known good battery. If it turns over smartly, then work through the starting circuit. There's very little involved in spinning the engine with the starter: battery, cables, starter switch and starter. You can change out the battery; clean/tighten the cables; jump over the switch; test starter as above. Good luck!
