I've picked up a 440 and you have to shut tractor off and start it in gear. what would be wrong with this. when push clutch in it wont stop either.

Sounds like the release brg. has pushed through the fingers on the pressure plate. The fix on a 440 is not as bad as it looks. The tranny can be unbolted & a tranny stand/holder lets you slide the tranny to the rear enuf to replace the pressure plate & clutch & then push tran. back & bolt up. Good luck. JERRY-KS

Jerry is correct. It's not a bad job to change the clutch and pressure plate; we have done this and getting ready to do another; it's just big heavy work. The smaller person you are the better because you have to half way stand up under the cab to do the work. When you do this and the tranny is backed away from the engine, make sure the input shaft, from the trany, does not have the splines whollered out. This will prevent the clutch plate from sliding on that shaft when the clutch pedal is applied; it must slide back and forth on the shaft. If you have to change that input shaft, you have to do a tranny tear down to replace it. We have smoothed out the whollered splines with a die grinder to keep from having to do this; it worked very well. Also, you might check and possibly change the input shaft seal on the tranny side. It probably is leaking. Hope this helps...
